Not the most polished.
Not the most “on brand.”
Not the ones parroting whatever the latest thought-leadership trend is on LinkedIn this week.
The ones who cut through? They sound like themselves, and that’s exactly why they earn trust, loyalty, and sales without chasing or shouting.
I’ve lost count of how many times, after a keynote or panel, someone has said to me, “I wish I could speak the way you do.”
And my answer is always the same, “You can. But not by trying to sound like me, or anyone else.”
Because imitation kills trust. It turns you into background noise. And in a world already drowning in recycled soundbites, you can’t afford to be forgettable.
Why Trust Is the Currency That Matters
In business, whether you’re leading a corporate team or running your own show, trust is the currency that gets you the meeting, the contract, the yes.
But trust isn’t built through perfection. It’s built through connection. And connection is built through value exchange: you give people something real (insight, inspiration, a genuine “me too” moment) and in return, they give you their attention, their belief, and eventually, their business.
That’s why your voice matters so much. When people feel like they know you, your quirks, flaws, fire and all, they stop treating you as just another option. You become the choice.
However, most people get stuck trying to perfect the first draft of their voice. Their “voice” is just a stitched-together version of what they think they should sound like.
I see it in first drafts all the time. Content stuffed with buzzwords, corporate jargon, and cookie-cutter frameworks. Safe. Predictable. Forgettable.
If you want trust, you have to be braver than that. Toss the first draft. Ask yourself, “What do I really want to say?” Then write that.
Because every word that sounds like you is a deposit in your trust bank.
So what do you need to be focusing on instead? Here are 3 ways you can start building trust by owning your voice.
- Lead With What Lights You Up
Energy is contagious. If you’re not lit up by what you’re saying, why would anyone else be? Start with what matters to you, and your audience will feel it. - Share the Sweaty-Palmed Stories
Forget flawless. People trust you more when you’ve been through the mess and made it out alive. Tell the story of the pitch you bombed or the meeting where your voice shook. That’s the gold. - Turn Up Your Quirks
Your “too much” is someone else’s “thank god she said that.” When you own your difference, you magnetise the right people and quietly repel the wrong ones, which is exactly how trust grows.
Every touchpoint, from a LinkedIn post to a client proposal, is an opportunity to either build trust or chip away at it. So, are you giving people the real you, or the auto-tuned version you think will please the masses?
