What if that sneaky voice in your head whispering “you don’t belong here” isn’t your enemy, but your secret weapon? We’ve all been taught to see imposter syndrome as something to overcome, but what if there’s a way to reframe it in a positive way?
We’ve all been there—sitting in that meeting or standing at the edge of something new, convinced everyone’s about to discover we’re frauds. The term “imposter syndrome” was coined in 1978, and it’s been haunting high achievers ever since. I call it the “itus” family: not-good-enough itus, comparison itus and that persistent procrastination-fueled-by-fear itus.
But here’s the reframe that changes everything: that imposter feeling isn’t a red flag, but a green light urging you forward.
Confident Humility: Your Competitive Edge
There’s something powerful about confident humility—that sweet spot where self-belief meets openness to growth. As Adam Grant puts it, it’s about doubting your tools whilst believing boldly in your potential to evolve. Imposter syndrome hands you that exact opportunity.
When I decided to start speaking and writing, excitement mixed with terror in equal measure. But embracing that duality pushed me to hire the best mentors, sharpen my skills and transform my career. The fear wasn’t holding me back—it was demanding I level up.
Your Quirks Are Your Currency
Instead of focusing on what’s broken, focus on what’s working. This is appreciative inquiry in action—developing your quirks into strengths rather than apologising for them. Your authentic quirks aren’t flaws to fix—they’re features to amplify. The messiness becomes magic when you stop trying to sand down your edges.
There’s something magic when pen meets paper, so let’s dive into a little exercise that’ll help you unlock your hidden superpowers. Grab yourself a piece of paper and let’s start by owning the negative. Jot down a couple of those stinging critiques—those words that have haunted you, whether they’re from your own inner critic or past feedback from others. Now, here’s where the transformation begins. Oppose each negative word you’ve written with its positive twin. For example, ‘judgemental’ might become ‘discerning’, ‘impatient’ could transform into ‘results-driven’ and ‘domineering’ becomes ‘visionary leader’. Finally, let’s strike gold. Evolve these traits into their most powerful forms. Instead of battling against your nature, harness it. Unearth the brilliance within the chaos and channel it as your personal strength. This is how you go from imposter feelings to embracing your own distinct kind of brilliance.
The Liberation of Not Being Perfect
Here’s where it gets interesting. Imposter syndrome can paralyse or propel you—sometimes both. But when you feel like an imposter, you’ve got everything to gain and nothing to protect. No perfect image to maintain, no reputation to uphold.
This liberation spurs innovation, encourages deeper preparation and fuels relentless learning. Every time that imposter voice whispers in my ear, I use it to sharpen my focus and channel my growth. It’s not trying to stop me—it’s trying to prepare me.
Your New Relationship with Doubt
Next time you feel like a fraud, don’t retreat—lean in. That feeling isn’t evidence you don’t belong; it’s evidence you’re growing. It’s the gap between where you are and where you’re headed, and that gap is where all the magic happens.
Imposter syndrome isn’t the problem—it’s the rocket fuel you never knew you needed. The question isn’t how to eliminate it, but how to harness it.
So here’s your challenge: the next time that familiar voice starts whispering, listen to what it’s really saying. It’s not “you don’t belong here.” It’s “you’re about to level up.”
