We’re living at a peculiar moment in time, aren’t we? Clients seem hesitant, projects stall and social media’s doing its own thing. I found myself recently, mid-conversation with my dog, questioning what I even control anymore. That little existential moment led to today’s reflection: reclaiming your power. Let’s talk about how to grow a brilliant business – even when the world’s a bit nuts.

In this episode, I dive deep into Stephen Covey’s concept of the three concentric circles of concern, influence and control—a framework that’s been my guide through some of the murkiest moments of my business journey. We explore the Circle of Concern, where we lose sleep over things like the economy and client ghosting but can’t actually control any of it. Then we move to the Circle of Influence, where it gets exciting—leveraging your energy to make a real difference without expecting total control. Finally, we reach the Circle of Control, where true magic happens and you decide how you show up, what you say yes to and what you decline.

Every moment presents a choice: succumb to chaos or ground yourself in clarity. When you prioritise powerfully, you build unstoppable momentum. So here’s my challenge for you: decide on one action you have complete control over and take it. Start small if you must, but reclaim focus from frustration.

I’d love you to share your action with me. Message me, tag me in a post or send a note by Carrier Pigeon if you must. And if this episode struck a chord, share it with someone who might need a push in taking back their power too. As always, keep showing up, leading with heart, and unleashing your brilliant self.

Janine:

Hello there.

Janine:

How are you?

Janine:

No, really.

Janine:

how are you REALLY?

Janine:

As you can probably

Janine:

tell, my voice is a

Janine:

little bit croaky today.

Janine:

I've come back from the US

Janine:

of two weeks of speaking

Janine:

workshopping and my voice

Janine:

is still recovering.

Janine:

So again.

Janine:

How are you really doing?

Janine:

Because honestly, if your

Janine:

answer is hanging on by

Janine:

a thread or one more zoom

Janine:

glitch away from a total utter

Janine:

breakdown, you're not alone.

Janine:

There is no doubt that

Janine:

we are living in this

Janine:

weird moment right now

Janine:

where everything feels

Janine:

just a little bit wobbly.

Janine:

Clients might be sitting

Janine:

on their hands waiting

Janine:

for decisions to be made,

Janine:

projects maybe stalling.

Janine:

Social media is doing

Janine:

its own little dance, and

Janine:

sometimes that silence after

Janine:

you send out that brilliant

Janine:

proposal, maybe it's louder

Janine:

than a stadium crowd.

Janine:

I had a moment the other day

Janine:

myself standing in my kitchen.

Janine:

I was on my.

Janine:

Third cup of coffee

Janine:

and I found myself

Janine:

talking to the dog.

Janine:

Yeah.

Janine:

I've even got myself to

Janine:

that point and I just

Janine:

blurted out what am I even

Janine:

in control of anymore?

Janine:

And that's what sparked

Janine:

today's episode, even

Janine:

with this croaky voice

Janine:

of mine, because.

Janine:

If you've been feeling a

Janine:

little bit rattled, maybe

Janine:

you've been a bit reactive

Janine:

or feeling like the world

Janine:

is spinning a little bit

Janine:

too fast, I want to help

Janine:

you take your power back.

Janine:

That is what we're

Janine:

talking about today.

Janine:

So I want you to

Janine:

talk about what's.

Janine:

The things that you

Janine:

are actually in control

Janine:

of, where can you

Janine:

actually control things?

Janine:

Years ago, I came across this

Janine:

concept from Stephen Covey.

Janine:

Some of you may have heard

Janine:

it, and honestly, it's been

Janine:

one of those really sticky

Janine:

ideas that stayed with me.

Janine:

It just doesn't

Janine:

leave my brain.

Janine:

The idea is that there's these

Janine:

three concentric circles.

Janine:

You've got your circle

Janine:

of concern, your circle

Janine:

of influence, and your

Janine:

circle of control.

Janine:

Now, this isn't just theory.

Janine:

This is one of those concepts

Janine:

that I've actually lived

Janine:

through, I've cried through,

Janine:

I've ranted at my mentor

Janine:

about, and ultimately I've

Janine:

rebuilt my business from.

Janine:

So I wanna dig into those and

Janine:

I'm gonna keep it really real.

Janine:

So the first circle that

Janine:

Steve and Kobe talks

Janine:

about, this outer circle is

Janine:

what he calls the circle.

Janine:

Of concern.

Janine:

I call it that spin zone.

Janine:

You know the space, it's

Janine:

where you worry about

Janine:

everything, you know,

Janine:

will the economy recover?

Janine:

Will that big client

Janine:

ghost me again?

Janine:

Will that next reel that I

Janine:

do bomb or will it go viral?

Janine:

All these things that.

Janine:

Either keep you awake, or

Janine:

that wake you up at 2:00 AM in

Janine:

the morning with a racing mind

Janine:

and a bucket of self-doubt.

Janine:

You know the things, I get it.

Janine:

We're leaders, we're

Janine:

empaths, we care.

Janine:

But here's the truth.

Janine:

You cannot control

Janine:

any of this stuff.

Janine:

And spending too much time

Janine:

here is like trying to

Janine:

herd cats in a hurricane.

Janine:

So when I catch myself

Janine:

spiraling and trust

Janine:

me, it happens a lot.

Janine:

I ask.

Janine:

Is this mine to fix?

Janine:

And if not, I bless it and

Janine:

I release it with love,

Janine:

usually also with a big,

Janine:

deep breath and maybe a

Janine:

tiny little swear word.

Janine:

So that's that first circle.

Janine:

The circle of concern,

Janine:

the outer circle.

Janine:

The second circle that COVID

Janine:

talks about is the circle of

Janine:

influence, and this is one of

Janine:

really beautiful, quiet power.

Janine:

This is where

Janine:

things get exciting.

Janine:

It's not about having

Janine:

total control, but it

Janine:

is where your energy

Janine:

has the opportunity

Janine:

to move the needle.

Janine:

You see, you can't stop

Janine:

a market slowing down,

Janine:

but you can reconnect

Janine:

with past clients.

Janine:

I was literally on a

Janine:

conversation with a new

Janine:

client this morning who was

Janine:

telling me about her three

Janine:

to four massive clients,

Janine:

six figure clients that

Janine:

she hasn't heard from in

Janine:

months, and this is the

Janine:

thing that I'm talking about.

Janine:

Her view was that these

Janine:

clients were ghosting her.

Janine:

My view was that this is

Janine:

an opportunity for you

Janine:

to reconnect, to be in

Janine:

service and to actually

Janine:

be a relationship creator

Janine:

versus waiting for

Janine:

those orders to come in.

Janine:

The thing is you can't

Janine:

fix people's decisions,

Janine:

but as I said, you can

Janine:

reconnect with them.

Janine:

You can't stop a market

Janine:

slowdown, but you can

Janine:

reconnect with past clients.

Janine:

You can't fix the algorithm,

Janine:

but you can create content

Janine:

that's so you and so

Janine:

powerful that it hits

Janine:

home regardless of likes.

Janine:

I remember during COVID when

Janine:

everything, like so many of

Janine:

us went to hell in a ha hand

Janine:

basket, and I had two choices.

Janine:

I either went into panic

Janine:

mode or I went into, and

Janine:

I hate this word, but

Janine:

it was a choice, right?

Janine:

I had to choose to pivot.

Janine:

And so I chose to go

Janine:

back to my network.

Janine:

I chose to offer

Janine:

help to check in.

Janine:

I chose to have

Janine:

real conversations.

Janine:

And guess what?

Janine:

That's when that momentum

Janine:

started coming back because

Janine:

when you focus on the things

Janine:

that you can control, and

Janine:

in this instance it was the

Janine:

relationships, the connections

Janine:

that I already have when

Janine:

I chose to focus on those.

Janine:

Everything changes.

Janine:

So this is that circle of

Janine:

influence and again, it's

Janine:

thinking about the things that

Janine:

you can influence that may not

Janine:

necessarily change the outcome

Janine:

'cause you can't control that,

Janine:

but you can influence the

Janine:

moving of the needle in the

Janine:

right direction, hopefully.

Janine:

Now the final circle,

Janine:

this inner circle, is

Janine:

the circle of control.

Janine:

This is the real deal.

Janine:

This is where the

Janine:

magic absolutely lives.

Janine:

Here's what you can control,

Janine:

how you show up, what you say

Janine:

yes to, what you say no to.

Janine:

You can control your

Janine:

creativity, your energy,

Janine:

the time you put.

Janine:

In the effort, you can

Janine:

control your pricing.

Janine:

Yeah, I know I go on and

Janine:

on about that, but you

Janine:

can control your pricing.

Janine:

You can control how you're

Janine:

showing up with conviction

Janine:

and your worthiness.

Janine:

I can remember once being knee

Janine:

deep in client proposals, and

Janine:

I remember catching myself

Janine:

rewriting the same sentence

Janine:

for the sixth time because

Janine:

I was actually scared.

Janine:

It wasn't perfect.

Janine:

Perfection.

Janine:

I mean, let's be honest,

Janine:

it's a lie that we tell

Janine:

ourselves when we're avoiding

Janine:

any level of discomfort.

Janine:

And so what I did is I pressed

Janine:

scent, I could control it.

Janine:

I pressed scent

Janine:

imperfectly, and guess what?

Janine:

The client didn't care.

Janine:

They just loved the

Janine:

clarity and the confidence.

Janine:

One of my own mentors I

Janine:

remember said something to me

Janine:

years ago that stuck with me.

Janine:

I was in one of those,

Janine:

those moods, the dramatic

Janine:

spiraling, convinced the

Janine:

sky was falling apart mood.

Janine:

And she simply asked me, INE,

Janine:

what are you in control of

Janine:

right now in this very moment?

Janine:

Gosh, it just stopped

Janine:

me in my tracks.

Janine:

And here's the kicker.

Janine:

What I found myself doing was

Janine:

this exact same thing only

Janine:

last week at our recent Inner

Janine:

circle and Elevate immersion.

Janine:

We were deep in strategy.

Janine:

We were planning out the next

Janine:

90 days, and I asked people,

Janine:

what is one thing that you can

Janine:

control right now that will

Janine:

drive commercial momentum?

Janine:

And then I asked, what's

Janine:

one thing that you can do

Janine:

that will unlock the

Janine:

start of building towards

Janine:

your next level of scale?

Janine:

The feedback from those

Janine:

sessions was amazing.

Janine:

People felt more motivated,

Janine:

more in control, and

Janine:

best of all, they

Janine:

walked out with a plan.

Janine:

Not a big scary perfect plan,

Janine:

but a doable, clear plan.

Janine:

Something that said, I've

Janine:

got this, because clarity

Janine:

calms the chaos and

Janine:

knowing where to focus.

Janine:

Well, that's where

Janine:

the momentum begins.

Janine:

So here's what I want

Janine:

you to think about.

Janine:

Where are you

Janine:

putting your energy?

Janine:

Are you letting outside

Janine:

chaos steal your calm?

Janine:

Or are you choosing moment

Janine:

by moment to stay grounded

Janine:

in what you can change

Janine:

in what you can control?

Janine:

Because when you do that, when

Janine:

you start making choices from

Janine:

a space and a place of clarity

Janine:

versus chaos, you build

Janine:

real unstoppable momentum.

Janine:

So here's your

Janine:

challenge for this week.

Janine:

I want you to think of

Janine:

one action that you can

Janine:

do that you can control.

Janine:

That's it.

Janine:

One action.

Janine:

What's one small thing that

Janine:

you can do right now to move

Janine:

from frustration to focus?

Janine:

Hit, publish.

Janine:

Follow up with that client.

Janine:

Raise your rate, go

Janine:

for a walk, get your

Janine:

head back on straight.

Janine:

Whatever it is, just do it.

Janine:

And then I'd really

Janine:

love you to tell me.

Janine:

I'd really love you to

Janine:

tell me what that thing is.

Janine:

Seriously, DM me, tag me, send

Janine:

me a note by Carrier Pigeon.

Janine:

I don't care.

Janine:

I just wanna know.

Janine:

And if this episode hit home.

Janine:

Please leave a review wherever

Janine:

you are listening to this

Janine:

podcast and make sure to

Janine:

share it with somebody else

Janine:

that you think it might help,

Janine:

someone who's ready to take

Janine:

their power back, because

Janine:

I know you've got this.

Janine:

Until next time, keep

Janine:

showing up, keep leading,

Janine:

and keep unleashing that

Janine:

brilliance of yours.
