If you’ve followed this journey with me, you’ll know that each conversation is an opportunity to learn, grow and maybe even find that missing piece that will spark your next big realisation. Today, I’m sharing someone truly extraordinary—Fleur Marks, a force of nature who has redefined what it means to live, lead and leave a legacy. We dive deep into a topic that touches so many of us: burnout, and what happens when life forces us to completely redefine success.

Fleur was once at the pinnacle of corporate success, ticking off every box that defined high performance. But success began to feel hollow and unfulfilling, and her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. From boardrooms to what she calls the ‘Waiting Room of Death,’ Fleur’s journey has been about radical acceptance and discovering what truly matters most.

In our conversation, Fleur shares how she discovered a new kind of brilliance in that waiting room, realising that real success didn’t lie in achievements alone, but in the ability to live each day fully with self-compassion and purpose. She opens up about transforming from a driven executive to a woman defined by intentionality, and how she’s built a life where ambition and self-care coexist. Whether it’s through silent Japanese tea ceremonies or simply wearing sequins to add sparkle to her day, Fleur’s practice of finding joy and balance is a testament to her resilience.

For those of us juggling work, family and the seemingly endless checklist of life, Fleur’s journey is a powerful reminder that we don’t have to wait for a crisis to start living differently. Her work now focuses on guiding leaders through their own journeys, helping them reset and refocus by embracing vulnerability and authenticity. This conversation will challenge you to ask yourself: Are you truly leading a life that matters to you? Have you defined what success means on your terms? It’s not just about surviving the waiting room of life, but thriving in it.

Hello, and welcome

Janine:

back to another episode

Janine:

of Unleashing Brilliance.

Janine:

Today's guest is nothing

Janine:

short of extraordinary.

Janine:

Flo Marx is a former

Janine:

corporate powerhouse, and

Janine:

she's now living in what

Janine:

she calls the waiting

Janine:

room of death, a terminal

Janine:

diagnosis, no cure, and no

Janine:

roadmap for what comes next.

Janine:

But flu isn't retreating.

Janine:

She's showing up with radical

Janine:

acceptance, fierce clarity,

Janine:

and a mission that couldn't

Janine:

be more urgent to make

Janine:

sure that other executives

Janine:

and business owners don't

Janine:

wait for a diagnosis to

Janine:

start living differently.

Janine:

This isn't just about burnout

Janine:

or balance, it's about legacy.

Janine:

It's about choosing impact.

Janine:

Over ego presence, over

Janine:

performance, and leading a

Janine:

life that actually matters.

Janine:

So take a deep breath

Janine:

'cause this conversation

Janine:

I know will move you.

Janine:

It will challenge the way you

Janine:

work and the way you live,

Janine:

and it might just save you

Janine:

from making the same mistakes.

Janine:

Let's dive in.

Janine:

Hello.

Janine:

Welcome to Unleashing

Janine:

Brilliance.

Janine:

How are you today?

Fleur:

Wonderful.

Fleur:

Thank you.

Fleur:

Great to see you, Janine.

Janine:

Oh, you too.

Janine:

It is so exciting to have

Janine:

this conversation here

Janine:

and to give listeners a

Janine:

chance to get to know you.

Janine:

I've had the joy of working

Janine:

with you for oh gosh, a

Janine:

fair while now, and every

Janine:

single moment that we have

Janine:

to interact where I get

Janine:

to learn more about you,

Janine:

helping you unpack your

Janine:

ip, helping you do this.

Janine:

Incredible, which will

Janine:

get to exciting next

Janine:

season of your life.

Janine:

I'm inspired, by both the

Janine:

woman that you are, but also

Janine:

the passion that you have

Janine:

for the work that you do.

Janine:

So I'm really excited to

Janine:

share you with more people.

Janine:

So thank you for

Janine:

trusting the process.

Janine:

Flo, it's, it is wonderful

Janine:

to have you here.

Janine:

now, as I said in my

Janine:

intro, let's, let's just

Janine:

jump straight into it.

Janine:

You know, I shared in my intro

Janine:

your incredible background.

Janine:

you know, on paper

Janine:

you had it all.

Janine:

like so many of my listeners,

Janine:

uh, you've had a high

Janine:

powered corporate background.

Janine:

you had team and clients.

Janine:

You are a mom, like you

Janine:

were really working at that

Janine:

high level, top level in

Janine:

the industries that you were

Janine:

in, and I know some of the

Janine:

stories that you've told

Janine:

me about the hours that you

Janine:

put in the projects you did.

Janine:

Many of us can relate, so I

Janine:

guess the curious question

Janine:

for our listeners is what

Janine:

made you walk away from that?

Fleur:

I, as you say, Janine,

Fleur:

I, I was, running, or I guess

Fleur:

in the marathon of life, you

Fleur:

know, ticking all the boxes.

Fleur:

Fabulous wardrobe, we forgot

Fleur:

to mention as well, you

Fleur:

know, killing it, at, work.

Fleur:

doing the juggle, yet

Fleur:

something inside of me.

Fleur:

Was feeling pretty

Fleur:

empty actually.

Fleur:

I felt exhausted.

Fleur:

Definitely.

Fleur:

'cause I think the

Fleur:

relentlessness of being in a

Fleur:

high powered job, traveling

Fleur:

country to country, you

Fleur:

know, doing the mom job

Fleur:

as well as just trying to.

Fleur:

You know, live life, the

Fleur:

emptiness that was within

Fleur:

me wouldn't go away.

Fleur:

And I kept making a deal

Fleur:

with myself just to keep

Fleur:

going, keep pushing through,

Fleur:

it'll get better, or I'll

Fleur:

feel I'll take that rest

Fleur:

or I'll manage to enjoy

Fleur:

things when I get this done.

Fleur:

Whatever it was at the time.

Fleur:

and what happened, Janine,

Fleur:

it wasn't really my choice.

Fleur:

My body was shouting,

Fleur:

and I was ignoring

Fleur:

all the signs because.

Fleur:

I had too much to do and then

Fleur:

my body, took the charge of

Fleur:

me and I couldn't keep going.

Fleur:

I got really sick, so it just

Fleur:

put me on my bum basically

Janine:

Yeah.

Fleur:

And forced me to stop.

Fleur:

and that's probably

Fleur:

when I stepped back and

Fleur:

went, hang on a minute.

Fleur:

Perhaps this isn't quite

Fleur:

the life I had imagined.

Janine:

And I think

Janine:

so many can relate.

Janine:

I know a lot of my clients

Janine:

that I work with have

Janine:

been in that, position

Janine:

of, striving for that

Janine:

particular I. Position in

Janine:

an organization or striving

Janine:

for that particular goal or

Janine:

striving for that lifestyle

Janine:

win or that financial win.

Janine:

And then, you know, throwing

Janine:

family and having babies

Janine:

or aged parents and we're

Janine:

juggling so many bulls.

Janine:

this real almost unrelentless

Janine:

question of is this it?

Janine:

Is this how I'm supposed

Janine:

to live my life?

Janine:

But as you said,

Janine:

your body decided.

Janine:

To take over.

Janine:

And again, I know there's

Janine:

many people listening in

Janine:

where similar things have

Janine:

happened, but your body didn't

Janine:

just choose to take over.

Janine:

You talk about actually

Janine:

living every single day in

Janine:

the waiting room of death.

Janine:

Can you just add some

Janine:

context around that

Fleur:

So I worked myself

Fleur:

super sick um, the never

Fleur:

get better kind and had

Fleur:

to stop work for two years

Fleur:

to navigate treatment.

Fleur:

And unfortunately

Fleur:

there's no known and

Fleur:

cure for the autoimmune

Fleur:

disease that I have.

Fleur:

and uh, also on top of

Fleur:

that, I got cancer as well.

Fleur:

So it was a double whammy

Fleur:

What happened was my

Fleur:

disease spread to my brain.

Fleur:

It was at that point the

Fleur:

doctors said, look, you're

Fleur:

never gonna get better.

Fleur:

This is it.

Fleur:

Get prepared.

Fleur:

It's, you know, time to ready,

Fleur:

you know, ready yourself for

Fleur:

things getting a lot worse.

Fleur:

and I've been given the

Fleur:

gift, I guess, of sitting

Fleur:

in this waiting room of

Fleur:

death, I call it, uh, where

Fleur:

normally people get sick

Fleur:

and get better or they get

Fleur:

sick and unfortunately die.

Fleur:

And in my case, I'm

Fleur:

still sitting in this.

Fleur:

I'm very grateful to be

Fleur:

sitting in this waiting room,

Fleur:

where I had the opportunity

Fleur:

to kind of really process and

Fleur:

understand how I'd ended up

Fleur:

here, but also how I could

Fleur:

redefine my life while I

Fleur:

was in this waiting room.

Fleur:

I had to redefine what

Fleur:

success looked like for me?

Fleur:

My definition of success, you

Fleur:

know, ticking all the high

Fleur:

performer boxes was flawed.

Fleur:

Because ultimately I wasn't

Fleur:

happy or didn't feel that

Fleur:

sense of contentment.

Fleur:

So when I got the

Fleur:

news, this is it.

Fleur:

I spent some time really

Fleur:

trying to understand what

Fleur:

does success really mean

Fleur:

for me, knowing that my time

Fleur:

here might be limited and I.

Fleur:

That really helps sharpen

Fleur:

what matters to me.

Fleur:

And then re, I guess I've

Fleur:

had the opportunity to

Fleur:

really think about what's my

Fleur:

purpose, my legacy, my meaning

Fleur:

making while I am here and

Fleur:

feeling this time pressure

Fleur:

of, I don't know how long

Fleur:

I have, has been a gift in

Fleur:

so many ways, and that it's

Fleur:

allowed me to really sharpen.

Fleur:

what that does actually look

Fleur:

like for me and actually

Fleur:

put it into practice In

Fleur:

real life, I've actually had

Fleur:

the opportunity to figure

Fleur:

it out and then apply it.

Fleur:

And then actually I have

Fleur:

managed in the last 14

Fleur:

years to create the life.

Fleur:

It's taken me a

Fleur:

while to create the

Fleur:

life I truly wanted.

Fleur:

But at first I had no

Fleur:

idea where to start.

Janine:

So how long has

Janine:

this wait Have you been

Janine:

in this waiting room now?

Fleur:

It's about, well,

Fleur:

probably, I'd say I got

Fleur:

diagnosed 14 years ago

Fleur:

and it was probably about

Fleur:

six years into my journey

Fleur:

after a lot of treatment.

Fleur:

So yeah.

Fleur:

So what's that?

Fleur:

Eight years?

Fleur:

Yeah.

Fleur:

Seven, eight years.

Janine:

And you talked there

Janine:

about you talk about It being

Janine:

gift, this gift of being able

Janine:

to process this gift of being

Janine:

able to choose how you live.

Janine:

Lead your life.

Janine:

what sort of things did you

Janine:

discover during that process?

Janine:

What, what sort of things

Janine:

did you learn, uh, both about

Janine:

yourself and reflecting on,

Janine:

on that career that give

Janine:

you the fire now to share?

Janine:

What sort of things

Janine:

did you learn?

Fleur:

Uh, well first I

Fleur:

real, I, I was in denial

Fleur:

the first couple of years.

Fleur:

Like I kept being the eternal

Fleur:

optimist thinking it would

Fleur:

turn and I'd get better.

Fleur:

And when I found out

Fleur:

this was my prognosis,

Fleur:

I had to really sit with

Fleur:

and practice something

Fleur:

called radical acceptance.

Fleur:

And really understand that

Fleur:

and let go of the mom.

Fleur:

I wanted to be, the career.

Fleur:

I wanted to have the Big

Fleur:

status titles, the stuff

Fleur:

that I had to really accept

Fleur:

that I was in this body

Fleur:

and that my life as it

Fleur:

is now it is what it is.

Fleur:

And, and so for me it was a

Fleur:

real journey of, acceptance.

Fleur:

But also self-compassion

Fleur:

and self-love.

Fleur:

That which probably is,

Fleur:

you know, has, has paid

Fleur:

off more than any green

Fleur:

juice will ever, because

Fleur:

lots of people said just,

Fleur:

take care of your body.

Fleur:

But actually I needed to do

Fleur:

the inner work the work on

Fleur:

me and understand, how to be

Fleur:

kind to myself, how to put

Fleur:

myself first to take care

Fleur:

of me in a way that was.

Fleur:

Sustainable, but also in a

Fleur:

way that came from a place

Fleur:

of compassion and love.

Fleur:

And I think before I was

Fleur:

probably quite hard on myself.

Fleur:

I had very high standards,

Fleur:

unrelenting standards, and

Fleur:

I think it was this real

Fleur:

permission piece to own who I

Fleur:

am as I am and to do me, and,

Fleur:

but also to embrace my reality

Fleur:

and show up at any day that I

Fleur:

could get up out of bed and,

Fleur:

and be of service to others

Fleur:

and help others not end up

Fleur:

like me, but also as a mom.

Fleur:

Just being fully present to.

Fleur:

Each day rather than this

Fleur:

sort of forward state

Fleur:

of thinking about when

Fleur:

I, or just, or whatever.

Fleur:

It was just really about

Fleur:

being in the moment.

Fleur:

So that was a huge

Fleur:

lesson for me.

Janine:

and for our listeners,

Janine:

it is The thing about you is

Janine:

you still haven't stopped.

Janine:

So whilst this evolution has

Janine:

happened for you in terms of

Janine:

this radical acceptance, the

Janine:

work that you're now doing

Janine:

the things that you stand

Janine:

on stage and speak about

Janine:

the work that you're engaged

Janine:

to do in corporates, you

Janine:

still live and breathe this

Janine:

self-compassion and self-love.

Janine:

And again, you know, you've

Janine:

done this without stopping.

Janine:

You built a wellbeing,

Janine:

you built an online.

Janine:

Store called the

Janine:

Wellbeing Store.

Janine:

You had, bricks and

Janine:

mortar businesses.

Janine:

You were out there running

Janine:

training programs, coaching,

Janine:

standing on stages, despite

Janine:

this, place that you are

Janine:

living in, in terms of this

Janine:

waiting room and death.

Janine:

And, and equally doing all of

Janine:

that whilst maintaining this

Janine:

self-love and self-compassion.

Janine:

So before we, we move into

Janine:

what you are noticing and

Janine:

how your, uh, your message

Janine:

is so important for.

Janine:

For those that are running

Janine:

their own businesses or

Janine:

those that are in leadership

Janine:

what does self-compassion,

Janine:

self-love look like for you?

Janine:

Because like you said,

Janine:

everyone goes, look

Janine:

after your body, green

Janine:

juices, you know, dah.

Janine:

But it's so much

Janine:

more than that.

Fleur:

I think, first of all,

Fleur:

I have to own my ambition.

Fleur:

I'm not someone

Fleur:

who will sit still.

Fleur:

Uh, I love being amongst it.

Fleur:

I love people.

Fleur:

I love helping others,

Fleur:

and so I channeled into

Fleur:

what's my purpose and

Fleur:

while I'm here, what does

Fleur:

that look like for me?

Fleur:

And I don't think I'm

Fleur:

ever gonna slow down

Fleur:

really, like completely.

Fleur:

So I've had to work out

Fleur:

self-compassion practices that

Fleur:

I can bookend in my day, each

Fleur:

day, every day as a practice.

Fleur:

So, for me, self-compassion

Fleur:

is taking a 10 minute

Fleur:

break during the day.

Fleur:

For me, self-compassion

Fleur:

is taking care of

Fleur:

my body at the gym.

Fleur:

Self-compassion for me is

Fleur:

sitting and having, I sit for

Fleur:

a silent tea ceremony a couple

Fleur:

of times a week, full Japanese

Fleur:

tea ceremony just to slow down

Fleur:

and gain my perspective back.

Fleur:

Self-compassion for me is

Fleur:

doing things, hanging out with

Fleur:

people that I love and having

Fleur:

fun and enjoying the ride

Fleur:

because if this is it, I need

Fleur:

to make sure I enjoy it too.

Fleur:

So I kind of balance my, I

Fleur:

guess, natural work ethic.

Fleur:

With enjoyment and lightness

Fleur:

and fun and wearing sequins

Fleur:

because I can, and not

Fleur:

caring about so much the

Fleur:

small stuff or what other

Fleur:

people think of me, and just

Fleur:

really self-compassion is

Fleur:

owning my sort of crazy, wild

Fleur:

self, but also my ambition

Fleur:

that that pushes me every

Fleur:

day to get up and make a

Fleur:

difference and do something

Fleur:

with the time I've got.

Janine:

Yeah.

Janine:

I love that.

Janine:

And I love this concept

Janine:

of owning your ambition.

Janine:

What would you say to our

Janine:

listeners around that concept?

Janine:

'cause I know you talk

Janine:

a lot about this, and

Janine:

particularly to women

Janine:

about own your ambition.

Janine:

I. What does that

Janine:

actually mean to you?

Janine:

What's your message

Janine:

for people around that?

Fleur:

So for me it was

Fleur:

figuring out how do I still

Fleur:

be ambitious but not do it

Fleur:

at the cost of me, because

Fleur:

I'd always self sacrificed.

Fleur:

I'd always given all of

Fleur:

myself out to everyone, every

Fleur:

role, whatever, and me last.

Fleur:

And so I had to learn,

Fleur:

how do I balance my

Fleur:

ambition with actually not.

Fleur:

Taking me out literally.

Fleur:

And so I actually have figured

Fleur:

out how to do it in a way

Fleur:

that, one, I'm doing what I

Fleur:

enjoy, uh, and what I love.

Fleur:

So that definitely

Fleur:

fills my cup.

Fleur:

But secondly, I make sure

Fleur:

that there's space and

Fleur:

capacity for me to fill

Fleur:

my cup and to, really tune

Fleur:

into my gut if something

Fleur:

isn't feeling right, and I'm

Fleur:

striving and it feels like

Fleur:

I'm efforting too hard, and

Fleur:

it's just feeling difficult.

Fleur:

I'm really checking in

Fleur:

constantly with what my gut's

Fleur:

telling me, my gut brain,

Fleur:

and going, okay, maybe this,

Fleur:

I need to let go of this.

Fleur:

This is working for me.

Fleur:

Maybe this ambition or

Fleur:

this belief that I've got

Fleur:

right now isn't serving

Fleur:

me and it's costing me.

Fleur:

So I'm constantly checking in

Fleur:

with the, my inner narrative.

Fleur:

My gut.

Fleur:

And then also making sure

Fleur:

there's space and capacity.

Fleur:

I work less hours and, and

Fleur:

deliver more impact because

Fleur:

I'm really focused on what

Fleur:

matters and doing things

Fleur:

that I know, are meaning

Fleur:

making, but also that, bring

Fleur:

me contentment and joy.

Janine:

I love it.

Janine:

and in terms of, so you do a

Janine:

lot of work now directly in

Janine:

organizations, uh, working

Janine:

with leaders to essentially

Janine:

help shift that paradigm and

Janine:

essentially the wellbeing of

Janine:

that leadership workforce.

Janine:

And you speak a lot about

Janine:

this, and I know you're

Janine:

in the process of, writing

Janine:

a book and sharing this.

Janine:

Concept around the

Janine:

overachievers dilemma

Janine:

through your story.

Janine:

whatcha noticing?

Janine:

if you look at where you are

Janine:

at in the waiting room of

Janine:

death, this, gift as you call

Janine:

it, of being able to live life

Janine:

to own your ambition, to self

Janine:

love and have self-compassion.

Janine:

Being in that place

Janine:

and watching and seeing

Janine:

what you notice in

Janine:

the work that you do.

Janine:

this passion to share

Janine:

your, learnings, this gift

Janine:

that you've been given.

Janine:

What, what is driving it?

Janine:

What are you noticing?

Janine:

This making you go on

Janine:

a rant and a mission.

Fleur:

Uh, well, I'm

Fleur:

noticing in room that

Fleur:

leaders are showing up

Fleur:

completely exhausted without

Fleur:

perspective or clarity that

Fleur:

there's a belief system.

Fleur:

Out there, whether it's

Fleur:

within the individual leader

Fleur:

or within the organization,

Fleur:

that, uh, high performance

Fleur:

equals pushing and doing more,

Fleur:

that somehow we're gonna

Fleur:

get through this to-do list.

Fleur:

And all the things that are

Fleur:

on, on that, that leadership

Fleur:

is self-sacrifice that, Mostly

Fleur:

high performing leaders are

Fleur:

actually running on empty.

Fleur:

So when I'm in room, probably

Fleur:

the biggest gift I can give

Fleur:

them is space and capacity

Fleur:

to just slow it down,

Fleur:

catch their breath, take

Fleur:

perspective but also get to

Fleur:

do some of the inner work.

Fleur:

I don't think a lot of

Fleur:

leaders have had the

Fleur:

space to even think about

Fleur:

how am I showing up?

Fleur:

they're just running.

Fleur:

Literally on empty

Fleur:

from thing to thing.

Fleur:

Uh, meeting to meeting,

Fleur:

deadline to deadline,

Fleur:

delivery to delivery.

Fleur:

And so therefore they're not

Fleur:

really catching themselves

Fleur:

and taking a moment to

Fleur:

see how that's showing up

Fleur:

for themselves as leaders,

Fleur:

but also for others.

Fleur:

so I think, really

Fleur:

getting them to understand

Fleur:

the inner narrative.

Fleur:

What's the story they're

Fleur:

telling themselves?

Fleur:

Why are they pushing

Fleur:

themselves to the point

Fleur:

of losing themselves

Fleur:

in the process?

Fleur:

And then really understanding

Fleur:

what their leadership

Fleur:

ambition looks like and

Fleur:

how they're going to put

Fleur:

in the right practices or

Fleur:

disciplines to keep themselves

Fleur:

find a better way that's

Fleur:

a bit more sustainable so

Fleur:

they don't opt out or they

Fleur:

don't burn out, or they

Fleur:

don't end up sick like me.

Fleur:

So it's sort of really helping

Fleur:

them catch it and reset.

Janine:

are you finding,

Janine:

from what you're noticing,

Janine:

is it a generational thing

Janine:

or is it just everywhere?

Fleur:

I think there's

Fleur:

a bit of generational

Fleur:

difference, definitely.

Fleur:

I think you know, I was

Fleur:

in room with the younger

Fleur:

generation who, there was one

Fleur:

person who said, look, I'm

Fleur:

not working five minutes past

Fleur:

five o'clock 'cause that's

Fleur:

what I get paid to and I'll

Fleur:

do it two times a week, but

Fleur:

no more than 10 minutes.

Fleur:

And they're not prepared

Fleur:

to sacrifice in the

Fleur:

way that perhaps.

Fleur:

the, you know, the other

Fleur:

generations have known, you

Fleur:

know, work hard, play hard

Fleur:

kind of mentality, certainly

Fleur:

in the industries I work in.

Fleur:

So I think that, I also think

Fleur:

there's this overwhelm with

Fleur:

the younger generation around

Fleur:

what to focus on how to do it.

Fleur:

They're looking up to the

Fleur:

older generations, their

Fleur:

bosses, their leaders.

Fleur:

And they don't

Fleur:

wanna be like them.

Fleur:

So I think they're looking

Fleur:

for a better way too.

Fleur:

They just don't

Fleur:

know how to do that.

Fleur:

They feel the sense of

Fleur:

pressure and overwhelm and

Fleur:

just getting lost in it.

Fleur:

and still figuring out

Fleur:

who they are within that

Fleur:

and what they wanna do.

Janine:

So I'm curious

Janine:

again, just to delve into

Janine:

what you're noticing.

Janine:

there's multiple generations

Janine:

at work all navigating.

Janine:

There's some really

Janine:

challenging adaptive

Janine:

world that we are in

Janine:

right now, and I'm seeing

Janine:

it myself with three.

Janine:

bigger children, entering

Janine:

the workforce and trying

Janine:

to balance all things.

Janine:

And then equally, you know,

Janine:

being at the age that I am,

Janine:

I can absolutely relate to

Janine:

this work hard, play hard

Janine:

mentality that almost is

Janine:

an unconscious rule book

Janine:

that's really hard to break.

Janine:

I'm curious when you're

Janine:

in room, particularly with

Janine:

you know, high achieving.

Janine:

Leaders who have been

Janine:

programmed unconsciously

Janine:

to work in that way.

Janine:

How do you get them

Janine:

to identify, you talk

Janine:

about this inner work.

Janine:

how do get people To stop and

Janine:

to actually reconnect with

Janine:

their purpose and what's,

Janine:

important and what is the

Janine:

response to that process.

Janine:

I dunno if you've got

Janine:

any examples of the shift

Janine:

that it has made for

Janine:

some of your clients.

Fleur:

I think the inner work

Fleur:

that I get 'em to do is to

Fleur:

understand what shaped them to

Fleur:

be the leader they are today.

Fleur:

And that can be from,

Fleur:

you know, we learn

Fleur:

leadership through others.

Fleur:

Whether it's.

Fleur:

From our parenting or, you

Fleur:

know, our key influences

Fleur:

in our life or the

Fleur:

bosses that we've had.

Fleur:

so I get 'em to understand

Fleur:

what's, what's shaped them.

Fleur:

Then I get 'em to understand

Fleur:

what beliefs, limiting or

Fleur:

otherwise, uh, driving them

Fleur:

to push to exhaustion or to

Fleur:

push them to a point where

Fleur:

they're perhaps feeling

Fleur:

not so contented and then

Fleur:

I get 'em to reshape that.

Fleur:

So, to think about, well.

Fleur:

if I was here to make

Fleur:

impact, what does

Fleur:

impact look like for me?

Fleur:

and always give them

Fleur:

permission not to try

Fleur:

and do it all, but to

Fleur:

actually think, okay, if

Fleur:

I did three things this

Fleur:

year and made real impact,

Fleur:

what is that going to be?

Fleur:

So really sharpen their

Fleur:

focus and then I get them

Fleur:

to chunk it down and think

Fleur:

about, well, how can I do

Fleur:

that quarter by quarter?

Fleur:

Or, by, you know.

Fleur:

Role to help them get there.

Fleur:

And I had, I had a, a

Fleur:

senior leader last year

Fleur:

who had lost his mojo.

Fleur:

He had, he was in line to

Fleur:

become the next CEO but

Fleur:

was questioning whether

Fleur:

he wanted to even be that.

Fleur:

He didn't want to end up being

Fleur:

like the CEOs he'd seen before

Fleur:

him, but he also lost his.

Fleur:

Sense of self, in the

Fleur:

leadership journey.

Fleur:

He was a high, he's

Fleur:

a high performer.

Fleur:

so I got him back to thinking

Fleur:

about what mattered to him,

Fleur:

what was his core value

Fleur:

system, and got him to

Fleur:

really think about how could

Fleur:

he redefine the role of a

Fleur:

CEO that just because the

Fleur:

leaders before him had been,

Fleur:

you know, not necessarily

Fleur:

aspirational to him, that what

Fleur:

would that look like for him?

Fleur:

He'd do it differently

Fleur:

because people and

Fleur:

culture mattered to him.

Fleur:

And then I got him to really

Fleur:

think about, the legacy

Fleur:

he wanted to leave behind.

Fleur:

If he took on a a senior role,

Fleur:

but also not the legacy just

Fleur:

for his work, but for his

Fleur:

children and for his people.

Fleur:

He loved around him that

Fleur:

what, what was the impact he

Fleur:

wanted to make in his life?

Fleur:

And that helped him recenter

Fleur:

back to what mattered.

Fleur:

And actually he's

Fleur:

just flying now.

Fleur:

Like he's just taken this

Fleur:

whole ambition, but he

Fleur:

is doing it without it

Fleur:

being at the cost of him.

Fleur:

He's doing it from a sense of.

Fleur:

Self and a sense of clarity.

Fleur:

And I think that's allowed

Fleur:

him to then be really clear

Fleur:

on what, what he wanted to

Fleur:

ask for in his next role and

Fleur:

what he wanted to define as

Fleur:

how he was gonna make it his.

Fleur:

So I dunno if that answers

Fleur:

your question fully, but

Fleur:

it's, it's, I mean, often

Fleur:

it's just space giving as you

Fleur:

know, Janine, like, it's just

Fleur:

sometimes, but also giving

Fleur:

them practical tools that

Fleur:

they can use immediately.

Fleur:

if it's too hard, because it's

Fleur:

very hard to change behavior.

Fleur:

That's, you know, it's very

Fleur:

hard and we're all tired.

Fleur:

So how do you give people,

Fleur:

you know, really simple tools

Fleur:

that they can just start

Fleur:

to practice immediately?

Fleur:

just to give them that

Fleur:

little window of clarity or

Fleur:

perspective or meaning making.

Janine:

Hmm.

Janine:

talked there about

Janine:

that particular client

Janine:

and curiosity around

Janine:

legacy impact leaving.

Janine:

Why is this work so

Janine:

important to you?

Fleur:

Well, I dunno

Fleur:

how long I have here

Fleur:

and it's not going away.

Fleur:

My, my reality.

Fleur:

So, for me, I think.

Fleur:

I want my very long road

Fleur:

and the hard lessons I've

Fleur:

learned to be someone

Fleur:

else's short road, right?

Fleur:

I wanna help people

Fleur:

not end up like me as

Fleur:

a real driving force.

Fleur:

And for my children too

Fleur:

who've watched me, you

Fleur:

know, burn myself out

Fleur:

time and time again.

Fleur:

So I really want, I wanted to

Fleur:

master it for me first, and

Fleur:

I had to do that first was

Fleur:

I had to walk my own talk.

Fleur:

And then now it's more about.

Fleur:

Just making sure that.

Fleur:

With any leader that I am

Fleur:

lucky enough to come across to

Fleur:

help support them, to figure

Fleur:

out a better way, and for

Fleur:

them where it's sustainable,

Fleur:

they don't lose themselves

Fleur:

in the process and it's, and

Fleur:

that they can actually just

Fleur:

own who they are and show up

Fleur:

more authentically, not wear a

Fleur:

mask, not try and be something

Fleur:

they're not, not meet this

Fleur:

unrelenting standard that's

Fleur:

never gonna be realized.

Fleur:

And just really enjoy.

Fleur:

I mean, for me, you know,

Fleur:

conscious joy has been a real

Fleur:

part of, what I bring into

Fleur:

a room now, which is, this

Fleur:

real sense of self and joy

Fleur:

and, contentment that means

Fleur:

I can show up authentically

Fleur:

as me and but also enjoy it.

Fleur:

I only do what I love now.

Fleur:

I actually say no to lots

Fleur:

of things, but I just wanna

Fleur:

make sure that every moment.

Fleur:

I am in room as meaning

Fleur:

making, but also that I enjoy

Fleur:

the ride as well, so I get

Fleur:

a lot from the leaders too.

Janine:

Yeah.

Janine:

and you have to consciously

Janine:

say yes and no because as

Janine:

we've talked about in our

Janine:

conversations, you know,

Janine:

you can be in room and

Janine:

deliver an awesome 2, 3, 4

Janine:

days of, content for other

Janine:

people, and your passion

Janine:

is driving you, but your

Janine:

recovery because of your.

Janine:

Health takes that

Janine:

little bit longer.

Janine:

So it's this intentionality

Janine:

around, uh, working with

Janine:

clients that are committed

Janine:

to a different way of

Janine:

leading, knowing that that

Janine:

different way will absolutely,

Janine:

positively impact their

Janine:

teams, impact their results,

Janine:

impact their performance.

Janine:

So I love your

Janine:

intentionality around that.

Janine:

if we were writing.

Janine:

And I know you're

Janine:

writing a book.

Janine:

We'll have to get you back on

Janine:

when that book gets published.

Janine:

You know, your story is,

Janine:

and there's so much more to.

Janine:

it.

Janine:

You're very humble when

Janine:

you share your story.

Janine:

I really encourage our

Janine:

listeners to see if they can

Janine:

hear your story you know, I

Janine:

got you to speak at my event.

Janine:

And it touches people.

Janine:

And your courage, your

Janine:

bravery, your passion but

Janine:

this legacy piece that you

Janine:

want to leave you know,

Janine:

you, you've said it a few

Janine:

times today, I don't want

Janine:

people, I want a short What

Janine:

has been a long journey

Janine:

for me, for other people.

Janine:

so if you were writing the

Janine:

new Rules for leadership,

Janine:

if you had the chance to.

Janine:

Share your message

Janine:

with the world.

Janine:

what has to change?

Janine:

What?

Janine:

What are the fundamental

Janine:

things that, that we as

Janine:

individuals, as either leaders

Janine:

now or emerging leaders,

Janine:

as people running our own

Janine:

businesses, what do we have to

Janine:

do differently in your mind?

Fleur:

Well, probably one that

Fleur:

I am constantly working on

Fleur:

for myself as well is you're

Fleur:

enough already as you are that

Fleur:

owning, who you are and how

Fleur:

you are as you are right now,

Fleur:

and how you show up as you.

Fleur:

On good days, bad days,

Fleur:

you when you're feeling

Fleur:

tired, whatever, exhausted

Fleur:

that that's okay.

Fleur:

That you're enough

Fleur:

exactly as you are.

Fleur:

That the ING piece that

Fleur:

comes in when you don't feel

Fleur:

enough that that's where

Fleur:

some of the costs come.

Fleur:

And if you can own that,

Fleur:

that will really, filter

Fleur:

through to your team

Fleur:

and to those around you.

Fleur:

The second one

Fleur:

is vulnerability.

Fleur:

I used to always try and be

Fleur:

perfect, and I think there's

Fleur:

real connection in not having

Fleur:

all the answers As a leader.

Fleur:

Being vulnerable, you

Fleur:

know, I got this wrong.

Fleur:

You know, when you do make

Fleur:

those mistakes or when you

Fleur:

do not quite get it right to

Fleur:

really be open and vulnerable

Fleur:

with your team that, hey, this

Fleur:

is a struggle moment for me.

Fleur:

I didn't quite get this

Fleur:

right, but I'm working on it.

Fleur:

Or This is what I'm working on

Fleur:

to be an even better leader.

Fleur:

Or, this is where I'm at right

Fleur:

now and I need your help.

Fleur:

So I think, you know,

Fleur:

being vulnerable and I

Fleur:

think the third thing is

Fleur:

being really clear on what

Fleur:

matters and focusing on

Fleur:

that with single-mindedness.

Fleur:

Because trying to do it

Fleur:

all and tick off that to-do

Fleur:

list completely each day

Fleur:

or the e get through all

Fleur:

your emails, whatever that

Fleur:

thing is that you are trying

Fleur:

to complete, that actually

Fleur:

just to do less well.

Fleur:

You know, three things.

Fleur:

A day.

Fleur:

If you can do three amazing

Fleur:

things a day, that's enough.

Fleur:

So I think really focusing

Fleur:

in on what matters and

Fleur:

not letting the urgent

Fleur:

or the noise or the busy.

Fleur:

Take control.

Fleur:

And really being single-minded

Fleur:

about, okay, if I did

Fleur:

one thing or how can I

Fleur:

be most effective today?

Fleur:

What's that one

Fleur:

thing I can do?

Fleur:

And do that first, rather

Fleur:

than all the other stuff

Fleur:

that's demanding attention,

Fleur:

because then you'll get.

Fleur:

Sense of progression and a

Fleur:

sense of fulfillment, but also

Fleur:

you'll also then move things

Fleur:

forward rather than having to

Fleur:

do your real work at night or

Fleur:

feel like you're never quite

Fleur:

achieving what you want to.

Fleur:

those are, I guess,

Fleur:

my three things.

Fleur:

I think there was three.

Janine:

I think

Janine:

there was three.

Janine:

I love that efforting

Janine:

is where the cost is.

Janine:

Fleur, I have to ask as we

Janine:

sort of get to the end of

Janine:

this conversation you know,

Janine:

if people are watching you

Janine:

now on YouTube, there's so

Janine:

much joy that emanates from

Janine:

you and I don't think I've

Janine:

ever, in the time that I've

Janine:

worked with you, seeing you

Janine:

not smiling, this conscious

Janine:

joy is such a part of you.

Janine:

I can't even begin to imagine

Janine:

what it must feel like to

Janine:

live in this waiting room

Janine:

of death where you know,

Janine:

you've got beautiful children

Janine:

doing remarkable things.

Janine:

You recently renewed

Janine:

your vows with your

Janine:

beautiful husband 25?

Janine:

years.

Janine:

You, I just got goosebumps.

Janine:

You renewed your vows.

Janine:

how do you.

Janine:

stay there with so

Janine:

much grace and so

Fleur:

you.

Janine:

Joy?

Fleur:

I think.

Fleur:

I'm kind to myself, I think's

Fleur:

probably the simplest answer.

Fleur:

And I wobble off all the time.

Fleur:

You know, I forget I have

Fleur:

an invisible illness, so

Fleur:

even I forget when I rock

Fleur:

up to hospital, you know,

Fleur:

I go, oh, that's right.

Fleur:

I. I've learned to navigate

Fleur:

pain and really navigate

Fleur:

my mind and get my mind

Fleur:

and body to work as one.

Fleur:

And I think just for me,

Fleur:

it's self-kindness, but also

Fleur:

daily practices that it's

Fleur:

the small shifts that made

Fleur:

the biggest impact to me, and

Fleur:

I have to keep checking in.

Fleur:

Have I wobbled off again

Fleur:

'cause I go shiny, shiny,

Fleur:

or, you know, something

Fleur:

excites me and I'm off down

Fleur:

another path or I don't know.

Fleur:

So I just have to

Fleur:

keep bringing myself

Fleur:

back constantly.

Fleur:

And I have people like you.

Fleur:

You know, I have

Fleur:

you as my coach.

Fleur:

I have my therapist, and

Fleur:

I have a couple of really

Fleur:

important people who keep me.

Fleur:

Grounded and on the path.

Fleur:

So I don't wobble

Fleur:

off too much now.

Fleur:

and I just practice what

Fleur:

I preach really, and

Fleur:

I just, I just feel so

Fleur:

lucky to be here You know,

Fleur:

but I have hard days.

Fleur:

I have bad days.

Fleur:

Of course, there's days

Fleur:

where I lose faith and

Fleur:

hope and, you know, I do.

Fleur:

And and you know, I go

Fleur:

down the, dark lane of

Fleur:

pity and so I just keep

Fleur:

bringing myself back.

Fleur:

To my present self and to

Fleur:

what I can control and what I

Fleur:

can't control and what matters

Fleur:

and then kind of just try and

Fleur:

laugh it off or go for a walk

Fleur:

or hang out with Mother Nature

Fleur:

and not let it hold me or

Fleur:

own me as much as it perhaps

Fleur:

used to this, this drive.

Fleur:

And just try and

Fleur:

find a way to kind of

Fleur:

recalibrate constantly.

Janine:

Yeah,

Janine:

You've got such bravery

Janine:

and such courage.

Janine:

And as you've said to

Janine:

me a couple of times,

Janine:

you, you've come.

Janine:

To accept.

Janine:

What is.

Janine:

gonna happen at some

Janine:

point.

Janine:

And your point around, that's

Janine:

the gift as well, because it

Janine:

makes you live and breathe and

Janine:

do the work that you're doing.

Janine:

What is the legacy

Janine:

you are leaving?

Fleur:

Well, I guess, you

Fleur:

know, I was just thinking

Fleur:

when you said that I'm

Fleur:

always smiling and I remember

Fleur:

Mar Young who was, who was

Fleur:

the global CEO of Ogilvy,

Fleur:

where I used to work.

Fleur:

He used to call me the

Fleur:

Happy Warrior, and that

Fleur:

was before I got sick.

Fleur:

Uh, I think my legacy

Fleur:

is helping people find

Fleur:

a better way, to lead

Fleur:

sustainably authentically

Fleur:

as their true self, and.

Fleur:

to also help my children

Fleur:

to understand what it means

Fleur:

to live a full life and.

Fleur:

To own who they are and,

Fleur:

and you know, there's

Fleur:

enough peace that they're

Fleur:

enough as they are, and

Fleur:

no matter what happens

Fleur:

in this world for them.

Fleur:

and I think, you know,

Fleur:

I feel like this gift

Fleur:

piece where I've managed

Fleur:

to master something that

Fleur:

worked for me, this kind

Fleur:

of blueprint around how to

Fleur:

lead with ambition without

Fleur:

it being at the cost of you.

Fleur:

I want it to impact, to help

Fleur:

as many people as possible.

Fleur:

And that I constantly pivoted

Fleur:

and, and improved and, in

Fleur:

myself practiced what I'm

Fleur:

talking about, but also

Fleur:

helped others get there.

Fleur:

Because once you unlock

Fleur:

this way of being

Fleur:

there's no going back.

Fleur:

Uh, so, and I guess once

Fleur:

you experience it, it

Fleur:

shifts something within you.

Fleur:

So, think for me it's get

Fleur:

is make us get get my book

Fleur:

or me be in front of room

Fleur:

or, but not at the cost

Fleur:

of me, but always taking

Fleur:

care of me on the journey.

Fleur:

But to help as many

Fleur:

people figure out their

Fleur:

leadership system that

Fleur:

allows 'em to do this well

Fleur:

is my legacy for sure.

Fleur:

And I think I've already

Fleur:

done it, to be honest,

Fleur:

but, so now it's just

Fleur:

all bonus stuff, right?

Janine:

Yeah, and I can't

Janine:

wait for this, this book,

Janine:

we can't even share a

Janine:

title yet because it's, uh,

Janine:

currently with a number of

Janine:

publishers in the hope that

Janine:

someone will publish it.

Janine:

So if there's any publishers

Janine:

listening to this,

Janine:

make sure to reach out.

Janine:

Flour, I just wanna

Janine:

Thank you, for being

Janine:

you for the gift of you.

Janine:

For the incredible support

Janine:

that you give to others,

Janine:

but also through how you are

Janine:

living and leading and how

Janine:

that is creating such a ripple

Janine:

for other people to follow.

Janine:

And anybody listening in here

Janine:

right now who may be feeling.

Janine:

Wobbly themselves, maybe

Janine:

feeling like they're

Janine:

at brink of burnout or

Janine:

they're in burnout or

Janine:

they're just not coping.

Janine:

Highly recommend that you

Janine:

check out flow's work whether

Janine:

it's about getting some

Janine:

one-on-one support or even

Janine:

bringing flow into your

Janine:

organizations to get your

Janine:

teams and your leaders to

Janine:

start thinking differently

Janine:

because there is a better way.

Janine:

This overachievers dilemma is

Janine:

making too many people either.

Janine:

Invisibly sick or outwardly

Janine:

sick, and it's up to

Janine:

us to, to lead the way.

Janine:

Thank you, so much

Janine:

flour, sending you

Janine:

so much love and keep doing

Janine:

the awesome work that you're

Janine:

doing, because you are a

Janine:

gift to all of us and so many

Fleur:

Thank you, Janine.

Janine:

You.
