Business Lessons from My 19-Year Old Daughter

We often look to business gurus, leadership coaches and self-help books for life’s most profound lessons. But sometimes, the most powerful insights come from unexpected teachers—like my 19-year-old daughter, Taya.

Watching her navigate early adulthood with remarkable intentionality has been nothing short of revolutionary for me. Her approach to life challenges everything my generation was taught about success, relationships, and self-worth. Today, I’m sharing the eight lessons that have fundamentally shifted how I show up in both business and life—and they might just do the same for you:

  • Lesson 1: Embrace Self-Care Without Guilt
  • Lesson 2: The Joy of Rest
  • Lesson 3: Love Unconditionally
  • Lesson 4: Say No First
  • Lesson 5: Finding Your People
  • Lesson 6: Being Independently You
  • Lesson 7: Ask for What You Want
  • Lesson 8: Go for What You Want

So here’s the challenge I’m throwing out to you: Which of these nuggets of wisdom resonates most with you? Pick one and try it out. See where it takes you. And let’s keep the conversation going—I’d love to hear what the younger generation has taught you, so share it with me on social media. Until next time, be kind to yourself, say “no” when it matters, and go after the life you want.

Hello, and welcome

Janine:

back to another episode of

Janine:

Unleashing Brilliance, a

Janine:

podcast where we dig into what

Janine:

it really means to lead with

Janine:

courage, to build a business

Janine:

with heart, and to show up

Janine:

with clarity, confidence,

Janine:

and a massive dose of grit.

Janine:

Now, today's episode is a

Janine:

little bit different because

Janine:

what I want to do today is

Janine:

approach it differently.

Janine:

Today, I am not the mentor,

Janine:

I'm the student.

Janine:

You see, over the last

Janine:

couple of years, my

Janine:

daughter, Taya, has stepped

Janine:

into adulthood with more

Janine:

intentionality and strength

Janine:

than I ever had at her age.

Janine:

And honestly watching

Janine:

her has been like a

Janine:

living masterclass.

Janine:

she's not just finding

Janine:

her way, she's actually

Janine:

teaching me a few lessons

Janine:

that I actually never

Janine:

expected to learn at 53.

Janine:

And so today I wanna

Janine:

share, oh my God.

Janine:

I just realized I gave

Janine:

my age away though.

Janine:

But there you go.

Janine:

So today I wanna share eight

Janine:

things I've learned from her.

Janine:

Eight lessons that have

Janine:

challenged me, humbled me.

Janine:

Eight lessons that

Janine:

have inspired me to

Janine:

show up differently.

Janine:

So let's dive in.

Janine:

So the first

Janine:

lesson, self care.

Janine:

Isn't selfish now.

Janine:

Taya moves every single day.

Janine:

She eats to fuel not to

Janine:

fix, and she rests when

Janine:

she needs to with no shame,

Janine:

no explanations, just

Janine:

commitment to her wellbeing.

Janine:

Meanwhile, if you really think

Janine:

about what I gave away there.

Janine:

In my age, you know, I grew

Janine:

up in the decade of, models

Janine:

like Kate Moss, where it was

Janine:

all about being as skinny

Janine:

as you possibly could,

Janine:

living on lettuce leaves,

Janine:

trying not to eat too much.

Janine:

and for years that was my.

Janine:

Almost my DNA of monitoring

Janine:

and watching my food and

Janine:

obsessing about my body, and

Janine:

I'd spent years subscribing

Janine:

from a work perspective to

Janine:

the hustle as worth culture

Janine:

work first, everything else.

Janine:

Eventually, and when

Janine:

Taya invited me to train

Janine:

for High Rocks with her,

Janine:

I thought, yeah, sure.

Janine:

How hard can it be?

Janine:

Three minutes into the warmup,

Janine:

and honestly, I'm regretting

Janine:

every single life choice that

Janine:

I'd made while she's jogging

Janine:

backwards and laughing.

Janine:

You see, it wasn't just about

Janine:

fitness, it was about respect.

Janine:

Respecting my body

Janine:

enough to fuel it well.

Janine:

Move it often and listen

Janine:

when it whispers, way

Janine:

before it screams.

Janine:

And so the takeaway here for

Janine:

me at the age that I'm at now

Janine:

and I wanna share with you

Janine:

is that you can't lead with

Janine:

brilliance if you are running

Janine:

on empty the second lesson.

Janine:

Is one of learning to

Janine:

rest and not just work.

Janine:

One afternoon I found her

Janine:

by the pool reading music,

Janine:

playing sunshine on her face.

Janine:

And I said to her, don't

Janine:

you have stuff to do?

Janine:

And she looked up and

Janine:

smiled at me and said, yeah,

Janine:

but I'm doing this first.

Janine:

And just like that, bam.

Janine:

It was like a life lesson

Janine:

in a bikini because you

Janine:

see rest in her world.

Janine:

Isn't something you earn,

Janine:

it's something you deserve.

Janine:

I, on the other hand,

Janine:

was taught that rest is

Janine:

a treat at the end of

Janine:

productivity, not part of it.

Janine:

And the truth here is that

Janine:

if you don't schedule your

Janine:

rest, your body's gonna

Janine:

do it for you, usually

Janine:

by way of burnout.

Janine:

Lesson number three.

Janine:

Around loving

Janine:

without conditions.

Janine:

You see, Taylor loves with her

Janine:

whole heart, her boyfriends,

Janine:

her friends, her brothers.

Janine:

There's no performance,

Janine:

no people policing,

Janine:

no keeping score.

Janine:

You know, I watched

Janine:

her recently drop off a

Janine:

little package of love and

Janine:

gifts for a sick friend.

Janine:

There was no big declaration,

Janine:

no Instagram post.

Janine:

Just quiet care.

Janine:

And it made me realize how

Janine:

often so many of us let

Janine:

love get transactional.

Janine:

You know, I did this

Janine:

so you should dunno, if

Janine:

that sounds familiar.

Janine:

And she reminded me that

Janine:

love and care isn't a ledger.

Janine:

That the minute we

Janine:

start keeping track

Janine:

of it, we lose magic.

Janine:

And I want you to think

Janine:

about the people in your

Janine:

world, the people that

Janine:

you serve, your clients.

Janine:

how much magic

Janine:

are you actually sharing?

Janine:

How much unconditional

Janine:

love and care

Janine:

are you actually giving?

Janine:

Lesson number four, and you've

Janine:

heard me talk about this many

Janine:

times, but it was so wonderful

Janine:

to have it reaffirmed, was

Janine:

this concept of say no first.

Janine:

when she said this,

Janine:

uh, her tender age of

Janine:

18, 19, it absolutely

Janine:

blew my mind because.

Janine:

Me on the other hand, I'd

Janine:

grown up with say Yes first.

Janine:

You see, Taya is crystal

Janine:

clear on her boundaries.

Janine:

She doesn't fear saying no.

Janine:

If something doesn't align

Janine:

socially, emotionally,

Janine:

or energetically, she's

Janine:

actually started opting out.

Janine:

Whereas, as I've said me,

Janine:

I've said yes more times

Janine:

than I can count just to be

Janine:

light, to avoid awkwardness or

Janine:

even just to keep the peace.

Janine:

And so.

Janine:

The key lesson I've

Janine:

learned here is saying no,

Janine:

doesn't make you difficult.

Janine:

It makes you discerning,

Janine:

and it frees you up for

Janine:

the things that matter.

Janine:

And let's be honest, at

Janine:

our age, if it doesn't

Janine:

light us up, why are

Janine:

we saying yes to it

Janine:

in the first place?

Janine:

Her fifth lesson was

Janine:

around finding your people.

Janine:

Yeah.

Janine:

As you know, I've

Janine:

written a book called,

Janine:

it's Who You Know.

Janine:

I'm not surprised that Taya

Janine:

reinforces this with much of

Janine:

the way that she makes her

Janine:

life choices and at 19, she's

Janine:

already let go of friendships

Janine:

that no longer fit.

Janine:

She's had those

Janine:

tough conversations.

Janine:

She's felt the sting

Janine:

of being excluded,

Janine:

and still she's chosen

Janine:

alignment over approval.

Janine:

She's taught me that

Janine:

loyalty doesn't mean

Janine:

tolerating what drains you.

Janine:

It means knowing who's truly

Janine:

in your corner and having

Janine:

that courage to walk away

Janine:

from those that aren't.

Janine:

Your people, they

Janine:

should see your value

Janine:

without explanation.

Janine:

They should cheer you

Janine:

when you win, and they

Janine:

should absolutely love the

Janine:

raw, unfiltered version

Janine:

of you, not just the

Janine:

highlight reel of you.

Janine:

Her sixth lesson is around

Janine:

being independently you.

Janine:

You see Tara and her

Janine:

boyfriend, they've been

Janine:

together since high

Janine:

school, but yet they're

Janine:

so fiercely independent.

Janine:

They've got different

Janine:

friends goals and hobbies.

Janine:

They support each other

Janine:

without merging into, you

Janine:

know, one big identity blob.

Janine:

And I love that because in

Janine:

my generation, particularly

Janine:

as women, we were often

Janine:

praised for sacrifice.

Janine:

As if giving up who we

Janine:

were was a badge of honor,

Janine:

but I know that the best

Janine:

relationships are two

Janine:

whole people choosing to

Janine:

grow together, not losing

Janine:

themselves in the process.

Janine:

Her seventh lesson,

Janine:

ask for what you want.

Janine:

You know, whether it's

Janine:

a better shift, a pay

Janine:

rise, or a spot on a team.

Janine:

She asks calmly,

Janine:

confidently, even when

Janine:

she's absolutely terrified.

Janine:

I've watched her send an

Janine:

email requesting a pay review.

Janine:

My inner voice was

Janine:

screaming, you know,

Janine:

wait, that's too bold.

Janine:

Only because she's my

Janine:

daughter, because I tell any

Janine:

of my clients to go for that.

Janine:

But she present and

Janine:

a week later that pay

Janine:

rise was approved.

Janine:

You know how many of us

Janine:

are still waiting for

Janine:

permission for someone

Janine:

to notice our worth?

Janine:

Because here's the deal, no

Janine:

one can read your mind ever.

Janine:

If you want something,

Janine:

you've got to ask for it.

Janine:

Her final lesson, number eight

Janine:

is to go for what you want.

Janine:

When she wanted early entry

Janine:

to uni, she applied When she

Janine:

wanted to join the surf boat

Janine:

team, she trained harder.

Janine:

When she wanted to

Janine:

transform her health,

Janine:

she didn't overthink.

Janine:

She simply got started.

Janine:

She doesn't wait for

Janine:

the right time, she

Janine:

just gets on with it.

Janine:

She just begins.

Janine:

And honestly, that's what

Janine:

separates dreamers from doers.

Janine:

It's not about having

Janine:

it all figured out, it's

Janine:

about taking that first

Janine:

step and then the next

Janine:

and the next and the next.

Janine:

Even when you're scared, even

Janine:

when you don't feel ready,

Janine:

because clarity comes through

Janine:

action, not contemplation.

Janine:

I. Watching Taya grow into

Janine:

herself has been one of the

Janine:

most inspiring and confronting

Janine:

journeys of my life.

Janine:

If any of you that have

Janine:

teenage children will have

Janine:

experienced this same thing,

Janine:

the this interplay, this

Janine:

delicate balance between

Janine:

inspiration and confrontation,

Janine:

but she's reminded me over

Janine:

and over that we're never

Janine:

too old to unlearn, to

Janine:

relearn, and to try again.

Janine:

So here's your

Janine:

challenge this week.

Janine:

Which one of these lessons

Janine:

spoke to you the most?

Janine:

I want you to pick one, write

Janine:

it down, and go and live it

Janine:

even in the smallest way.

Janine:

And I'd love to hear

Janine:

what you have learned

Janine:

from the next generation.

Janine:

Maybe it's your child,

Janine:

your niece, your nephew,

Janine:

your team member.

Janine:

What wisdom have

Janine:

they shared with you?

Janine:

Intentionally or not, share

Janine:

it on Instagram, Facebook,

Janine:

LinkedIn, and tag me at Janine

Janine:

Garner or message me directly

Janine:

because I'd love to know.

Janine:

And one quick thing before

Janine:

you go, if this episode hit

Janine:

home, please tap those five

Janine:

stars on whatever platform

Janine:

you're listening to or

Janine:

watching this podcast on,

Janine:

and leave me a quick review

Janine:

because it helps more amazing

Janine:

people find this show.

Janine:

And honestly, it

Janine:

means so much to me.

Janine:

Until next time, please

Janine:

be kind to yourself.

Janine:

Say no when it matters, and

Janine:

go after the life you want.
