A few years ago, the principal of my son’s school handed each graduating student a plain white stone. Nothing written on it. He told them, “Your names aren’t written on these stones. Your journey of self-discovery is only just beginning. You have the chance to shape who you want to become, to create your own masterpiece.”
I have never forgotten it, because whether you are seventeen, forty-seven or sixty, we are all still holding the chisel.
The same is true in business. Somewhere along the way, most of us stop building a business that reflects who we are, and start building one that looks like what we think success is supposed to look like. We watch our industry. We borrow its language. We climb into the nearest familiar category because it feels safer than standing alone in one we made up ourselves.
And then our positioning sounds exactly like everyone else’s. So the client has no real reason to choose us over the next name on the list.
Your positioning was never a tagline. It’s not a job title, and it’s not a clever line for your website.
It’s a declaration. What you stand for. What you believe. Who you’re actually here to serve – and just as importantly, who you’re not. It’s the line in the sand that tells the right person “you’re in the right place,” and quietly tells everyone else to keep looking.
Get that right, and everything downstream gets easier. The marketing. The decisions. The business starts feeling like yours again, instead of a version of everyone else’s.
I built the Positioning Wheel for exactly this – not another six-week exercise, but a way to get underneath the surface fast, and name the belief, the perspective, and the difference that’s actually yours. The strongest positioning was never manufactured in a workshop. It comes from what you see that others don’t, what you refuse to accept, and what you’re determined to change for the people you serve.
You’ve been holding the chisel the whole time. Most people just never realised it was in their hand.
If you want to carve yours out properly – not eventually, this week – ElevateOS™ can help you finish your Positioning Wheel in minutes, not months.
In a market this competitive, the businesses winning aren’t the loudest. They’re the ones who stopped hiding and waiting to be found, and gave the market an actual reason to say yes to them, specifically.
1. Open ElevateOS™ and try this: “Here’s what I currently say I do. Help me turn it into a positioning statement that tells the right people they’re in exactly the right place.”
2. And if you haven’t done the Focus Finder™ yet, do it here – then drop your report straight into ElevateOS™ and use this prompt: “Here’s my Focus Finder report. Don’t summarise it back to me. Tell me the three roadblocks actually holding my business back right now, what’s causing each one, and what my focus needs to be for the next 90 days. Push me if I’m avoiding the obvious answer.”
I’d love to hear how you go.
