What Makes Your Favourite Place Special?

Let’s play a little game.

I want you to think of your favourite place. Something along the lines of your favourite restaurant, bookstore, or cafe. A place where you interact with other people.

Have you got it pictured in your mind?

Okay, now I want you to think about all of the places that could offer you the same service that are more convenient and perhaps even cheaper than the place you’ve imagined.

There could be dozens, hundreds, of restaurants or cafes or bookstores that are more convenient than the one you are thinking of. You might even be able to get the same need met without even leaving the comfort of your own home if we think about online retailers and delivery services.

So why is that place your favourite? Why do you go there besides having more convenient options available to you? Why do you go there when there are cheaper options available to you?

This email was inspired by an email I received from Seth Godin called “Out of the way and a little inconvenient”, and he was absolutely right. When it’s something we love, we don’t mind that it’s out of the way and slightly inconvenient. Goodness, that phrase can even apply to the people we love if we want to really dig deep into it.

And as Seth puts it, “Be worth the trip.”

So what makes the trip worth it?

Is it the experience? The atmosphere?

The memories you create?

How you feel afterwards?

These are all things that you can control when working with clients. You can put in the extra effort to ensure they have a great experience. You can offer more than a service; you can craft ongoing support so that the final thing they remember is how they felt throughout the process.

You can make things unforgettable.

Because you are worth the trip. You are worth the price. And you have the power to become your client’s favourite person to work with.
