If your business only grows when someone remembers to mention you, you don’t have a business.
You have a hope.
I see this pattern in almost everyone I work with. See if it sounds familiar.
Good month. A client refers you to someone. That someone becomes a client. Cash flow eases. You breathe.
Then a quiet month. Nobody mentions you. You tell yourself it’s seasonal. You wait.
Then another quiet month. You start doing the maths on your savings, and wondering whether the work’s dried up, or you have.
Here’s what’s actually happening. You built something real – real skill, real results, a genuine reputation. And somewhere along the way you handed the growth of that thing over to other people’s memory.
Not their malice. Their memory.
They’re busy. They forget. They refer whoever was top of mind that week, and it isn’t always you, even when you did the better work.
Most of the people I work with who are running referral-only businesses built their name somewhere else first. A corporate career. A previous business. A reputation earned in a room they don’t work in anymore.
The referrals aren’t proof your positioning works. They’re the last fumes of a reputation you built before you went out on your own – and stopped building it on purpose.
Fumes run out. Every time.
I’m not telling you this to worry you. The feast and famine cycle isn’t a sign you’re doing something wrong. It’s a sign you never had a strategy in the first place. You had a hangover from a reputation someone else’s memory was carrying for you.
There’s a difference between being known and being positioned. Most of you are known. Almost none of you are positioned.
That gap is the whole game.
Here’s the part I actually want you to sit with, though. This isn’t a life sentence. Positioning is buildable. It’s not a personality trait some people are born with and others aren’t – it’s a structure, and structures can be built at any point, including right now, including by you.
