Facing Fears Instead Of Succumbing To Them

Fear is everywhere right now. Every time you turn on the television, we are being beaten down by images of everything that is going wrong in the world right now.

We are being told to prepare for the worst. That businesses will fail. That no one is buying. That deals aren’t coming through.

And you might have experienced some of this, which is fuelling your fear.

But fear isn’t a sign to stop, it’s a sign to keep going.

As someone who grew up in the North of England, the thought of venturing into the ocean was nothing short of terrifying. The vastness of the sea captivated me from the shore, but the idea of facing those cold and turbulent waters made my heart race. Despite moving to Australia with its inviting beaches, my fear persisted, and I yearned to experience the joy of diving into the waves like my family and friends.

But I knew that to live fully, I needed to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone. How could I do it without overwhelming my daily routine?

A few years ago, my dear friend and running partner, Kelly Slessor challenged my fear. As part of our daily beach runs we decided to end them with an ocean dip. After each run, we’d jump into the ocean, facing our fears head-on. The first time was daunting, and I questioned my decision, but we took the leap together, and the feeling of accomplishment was invigorating!

That experience taught me the power of finding a way that works for you. Breaking down challenges into manageable pieces, integrating them into your existing routine, and having an accountability partner can make all the difference. With this approach, we can conquer anything.

More importantly, I discovered the magic of curiosity. Fear is a natural part of life, but if we embrace curiosity about our fears, we can unlock incredible growth and experiences. Each time I faced my fear of the ocean, it lessened, and I felt stronger, even managing to duck my head under the waves.

Right now is an opportunity to reflect on your own fears and challenges. Be curious about them. Could you turn these fears into opportunities for personal growth? Is there a way to incorporate them into your life in a manageable and fulfilling manner?

Remember, it’s okay to experiment with different strategies. What works for one person might not work for another. The key is to embark on this journey of self-discovery with compassion and patience for yourself. Along the way, you might uncover aspects of yourself you never knew existed.

Have you faced a fear head-on and emerged stronger? Is there a fear you’d like to overcome before the end of the year? Your story might inspire someone else to take that leap of faith.
