You know the feeling—you’ve just had an incredible coffee chat with a prospective client. They loved your energy, called you inspiring and you walked away thinking, “This could be something amazing.” But then… nothing. Radio silence. Another lovely conversation that leads absolutely nowhere whilst your calendar stays frustratingly empty. In this episode, we’re tackling the uncomfortable truth: you’re probably brilliant at building connections but not quite as good at converting them.

The problem isn’t that people don’t value you—it’s that you never invite them to go deeper. They’re actually waiting for you to show them how. I share the story of a client who was having amazing conversations but freezing at the critical moment of transition. Once she shifted from fear of appearing salesy to simply extending a gracious invitation, she gained two new clients within a week. What you need isn’t more connections; it’s conversion.

I’m sharing five practical strategies for moving into a more human-to-human sales approach that feels authentic, beautiful and even fun. We’ll explore how to be crystal clear about your value, lead with curiosity over pitching, create inviting opportunities, follow up with grace and show up as your true self. I like to think of it as finding someone who wants to dance with me—not selling, but seeing if we’re meant to move together. Because at the end of the day, it’s the cash in your bank that pays the bills and keeps your business in business.

Hello, and welcome

Janine:

to another episode of

Janine:

Unleashing Brilliance.

Janine:

Wonderful to have you

Janine:

here again this week.

Janine:

And this week.

Janine:

I wanna talk about something

Janine:

that so many brilliant women

Janine:

struggle with, and that is

Janine:

how do you turn

Janine:

great conversations

Janine:

into paying clients?

Janine:

Without feeling like a

Janine:

pushy salesperson from

Janine:

a nineties infomercial.

Janine:

You know what I'm

Janine:

talking about here?

Janine:

You know, you've done the

Janine:

work, you've built the

Janine:

connections, you've shown

Janine:

up with heart and value

Janine:

and generosity, but when

Janine:

it comes to asking someone

Janine:

to actually work with you.

Janine:

You freeze.

Janine:

You second guess yourself.

Janine:

You worry you are going to

Janine:

sound desperate or awkward,

Janine:

or God forbid, salesy.

Janine:

So what happens, what I

Janine:

see is people pull back.

Janine:

You might get vague,

Janine:

you leave money on the

Janine:

table, and you leave your

Janine:

impact on the table too.

Janine:

Well, not anymore because

Janine:

in today's episode I want to

Janine:

share with you how to turn

Janine:

connections that you already

Janine:

have into paying clients with

Janine:

zero scripts and zero cringe.

Janine:

Just clarity, courage and

Janine:

conversations that convert.

Janine:

So let's just start.

Janine:

Reflecting on the term sales

Janine:

for a second, shall we?

Janine:

There is no doubt in my mind

Janine:

that selling has gotten a

Janine:

bad rap, because let's be

Janine:

honest with each other.

Janine:

Most of us have experienced

Janine:

it at its worst.

Janine:

You know, the vibe,

Janine:

someone you haven't heard

Janine:

from four years slides

Janine:

into those dms like, Hey

Janine:

babe, love your energy.

Janine:

Have you ever.

Janine:

Starting a podcast.

Janine:

Have you ever thought

Janine:

about writing a book?

Janine:

It's like, eh,

Janine:

vomit in my mouth.

Janine:

Delete, block, run.

Janine:

So it's no wonder that

Janine:

we swing so hard in

Janine:

the opposite direction.

Janine:

We don't wanna be

Janine:

that person, do we?

Janine:

And so what ends up happening

Janine:

is we end up saying nothing.

Janine:

We wait.

Janine:

We wait.

Janine:

We wait and we just hope,

Janine:

keep our fingers crossed.

Janine:

We hope that people will

Janine:

just know that our doors are

Janine:

open for business and that

Janine:

we're available for work.

Janine:

We give, we give and we

Janine:

give, and then we feel

Janine:

resentful when people don't

Janine:

magically offer to payers.

Janine:

I wanna say this, once again,

Janine:

I've said it multiple times

Janine:

on this podcast before.

Janine:

Hope is not a strategy.

Janine:

And your brilliance

Janine:

deserves to be paid.

Janine:

I had a client,

Janine:

recently, and she came

Janine:

to me totally deflated.

Janine:

She said something like this.

Janine:

It was like, Hey, Janine,

Janine:

I've been having these

Janine:

really amazing coffee chats.

Janine:

Everyone says, oh, wow.

Janine:

I love your energy, or,

Janine:

you are so inspiring.

Janine:

But here's the thing,

Janine:

Janine, nothing ever

Janine:

comes from it, and it's

Janine:

getting really frustrating.

Janine:

The impact of nothing

Janine:

coming from it was, it

Janine:

was negatively, in fact,

Janine:

impacting her sales numbers.

Janine:

It was negatively

Janine:

impacting her delivery.

Janine:

Her calendar was looking

Janine:

almost empty, actually.

Janine:

And so what we did is we

Janine:

unpacked it, and guess what?

Janine:

We found this person,

Janine:

this client, I'm trying

Janine:

hard not to say her name.

Janine:

She was incredible, right?

Janine:

She was incredible

Janine:

in the conversation.

Janine:

Curious, generous,

Janine:

really great listener.

Janine:

But when it came to the moment

Janine:

of transition, that moment

Janine:

where you invite someone

Janine:

to take the next step, she

Janine:

absolutely froze because she

Janine:

didn't want to be salesy.

Janine:

But here's what I said to her.

Janine:

The problem isn't that

Janine:

people don't value you

Janine:

it's that you never

Janine:

invite them to go deeper.

Janine:

They don't know how

Janine:

they're waiting for you.

Janine:

Within a week of changing

Janine:

that one thing, this

Janine:

particular client closed

Janine:

two new clients for herself.

Janine:

No pressure, no pitch,

Janine:

no crazy long pitch deck,

Janine:

just a shift in her energy

Janine:

and a simple invitation.

Janine:

You see, connection

Janine:

isn't enough.

Janine:

What you need is conversion.

Janine:

At the end of the day, it's

Janine:

the cash in your bank that

Janine:

pays the bills, that keeps

Janine:

your business in business.

Janine:

And I wanna say,

Janine:

again, being connected.

Janine:

Doesn't mean

Janine:

being in business.

Janine:

Yes, relationships matter.

Janine:

I talk about it all the time.

Janine:

I talk about it in my book.

Janine:

It's who you know.

Janine:

I talk about it in my

Janine:

book, be Brilliant.

Janine:

Relationships matter deeply.

Janine:

Absolutely.

Janine:

Yes.

Janine:

Being of service is key,

Janine:

but relationships that

Janine:

don't go anywhere well,

Janine:

they cost you time.

Janine:

And they cost you

Janine:

energy and they cost you

Janine:

your ability to scale.

Janine:

What we need is a bridge

Janine:

between value and conversion,

Janine:

and here's the good news.

Janine:

That bridge doesn't

Janine:

have to be awkward.

Janine:

In fact, I think it

Janine:

can be authentic.

Janine:

I think it can be beautiful.

Janine:

I even think it can be fun.

Janine:

I actually to say, when

Janine:

I'm sharing this with my

Janine:

own clients, I go, I'm

Janine:

actually looking to see if.

Janine:

people wanna dance with me.

Janine:

I'm looking for that

Janine:

dancing partner.

Janine:

I've totally changed the

Janine:

word in my head from selling

Janine:

to, "I'm looking to see if

Janine:

we're gonna dance together."

Janine:

Beautiful and fun.

Janine:

I wanna share with you, five

Janine:

ideas of how to actually move.

Janine:

Into this more human to

Janine:

human sales approach.

Janine:

so the first idea I've

Janine:

got, so the first thing I

Janine:

want you to think about is

Janine:

being crystal clear about

Janine:

what it is that you do.

Janine:

Now, this is where so

Janine:

many of you fall down.

Janine:

You are brilliant, but

Janine:

you are messaging, it's

Janine:

a little bit fuzzy, you

Janine:

know, empowering women to

Janine:

step into their purpose.

Janine:

It's not a value proposition,

Janine:

it's, that's actually more

Janine:

of an Instagram affirmation.

Janine:

Say what you actually do and

Janine:

who you do it for, and also

Janine:

share what the outcome is

Janine:

that you help them to create.

Janine:

For example, I don't know, um,

Janine:

"I help female consultants

Janine:

turn their IP into high

Janine:

ticket offers and land

Janine:

clients without burning out.

Janine:

Be more specific.

Janine:

Own it.

Janine:

Say it proudly, because

Janine:

this is what makes it

Janine:

easy for others to refer,

Janine:

recommend, and hire you.

Janine:

So that's step number one.

Janine:

Second thing I want you

Janine:

to think about, lead with

Janine:

curiosity, not pitching.

Janine:

Instead of feeling like

Janine:

you have to sell, what

Janine:

about getting curious?

Janine:

Ask real questions.

Janine:

Dig beneath the surface.

Janine:

What are they

Janine:

really stuck with?

Janine:

What is keeping

Janine:

them awake at night?

Janine:

What are they already

Janine:

trying that isn't working?

Janine:

Listen, get curious about

Janine:

where they're heading to,

Janine:

what their dreams are and what

Janine:

they themselves say are the

Janine:

roadblocks or the problems,

Janine:

and then you go, would it be

Janine:

helpful if I shared how I've

Janine:

helped someone in a similar

Janine:

position navigate that?

Janine:

would it be helpful

Janine:

if I shared with you

Janine:

some of the things that

Janine:

other clients are doing?

Janine:

You are not pushing.

Janine:

You are offering insight,

Janine:

and that's really powerful.

Janine:

It's generous and it's the

Janine:

very thing that creates trust.

Janine:

Third thought is make

Janine:

your work inviting.

Janine:

Not intimidating, nobody wants

Janine:

to be sold to, but everyone

Janine:

loves to be invited into

Janine:

something that feels exciting,

Janine:

clear and purposeful.

Janine:

So try this.

Janine:

You know, maybe you say.

Janine:

Does this sound like

Janine:

there's some alignment here?

Janine:

would it be worth exploring

Janine:

how we could work together?

Janine:

Are you curious at all

Janine:

about how I can help?

Janine:

Would you like to hear what

Janine:

working with me looks like?

Janine:

Like keep it really

Janine:

beautiful and relaxed

Janine:

versus hardcore salesy?

Janine:

Remember, we are

Janine:

looking for people that

Janine:

we wanna dance with.

Janine:

Do you see the tone?

Janine:

It's light.

Janine:

You are not pitching,

Janine:

you are actually

Janine:

creating an invitation.

Janine:

You are opening the door.

Janine:

Fourth idea, follow up like

Janine:

a pro and not a pest, is

Janine:

you sent the proposal right?

Janine:

They asked you to,

Janine:

you sent the proposal.

Janine:

I don't know what happens.

Janine:

We hear crickets and

Janine:

most of us go, now what?

Janine:

Most people either disappear

Janine:

entirely or follow up with

Janine:

a weird, I'm just circling

Janine:

back, or I'm just bringing

Janine:

this to the top of your inbox.

Janine:

One of those email that

Janine:

makes them feel awkward

Janine:

and you feel ignored.

Janine:

here's what I teach instead.

Janine:

I'd say something

Janine:

like, Hey Sarah.

Janine:

Hey, I just wanted to check

Janine:

in on the proposal I sent.

Janine:

No pressure at all.

Janine:

just wanna make sure it didn't

Janine:

slip through the cracks.

Janine:

It's what you

Janine:

were looking for.

Janine:

Let me know if you have

Janine:

any further questions or

Janine:

you wanna walk through it.

Janine:

I'd love to hear if it's

Janine:

a yes, not yet, or I need

Janine:

some more information,

Janine:

just let me know.

Janine:

I keep it really cheerful,

Janine:

really relaxed, versus

Janine:

I'm bringing this to

Janine:

the top of your inbox

Janine:

in case you missed it.

Janine:

No, we wanna be respectful,

Janine:

we wanna be professional,

Janine:

we wanna be human.

Janine:

And the fifth thing is to

Janine:

keep showing up as you.

Janine:

The best business is built

Janine:

on real relationships.

Janine:

Be that same person on

Janine:

a Zoom call as you are

Janine:

at a coffee catch up.

Janine:

Let people see you.

Janine:

Let them feel your fire

Janine:

because they're gonna buy

Janine:

your energy, confidence,

Janine:

clarity, conviction.

Janine:

You don't need to be polished.

Janine:

You just need to be, you

Janine:

turned up all the way.

Janine:

Right now, trust

Janine:

is the currency.

Janine:

People everywhere

Janine:

are so overwhelmed.

Janine:

They're over pitched.

Janine:

They're oversold to, but

Janine:

they're still investing in

Janine:

people that they believe

Janine:

in, in solutions that they.

Janine:

Trust in leaders like you

Janine:

who show up like pros,

Janine:

not like panic merchants.

Janine:

So if you are relying on

Janine:

hope, on freebies, on sliding

Janine:

sideways into inboxes,

Janine:

hoping that someone bites,

Janine:

I'm gonna lovingly say this.

Janine:

It's time to stop hiding.

Janine:

It is time to start owning

Janine:

your expertise and lead

Janine:

people forward, not from

Janine:

pressure, but from presence,

Janine:

because that's the energy

Janine:

people are drawn to.

Janine:

That's what turns

Janine:

just a connection

Janine:

into a paying client.

Janine:

That's what creates real

Janine:

commercial traction,

Janine:

not noise, not hustle.

Janine:

Just clear confident

Janine:

leadership.

Janine:

So here's this week's

Janine:

challenge, my friends,

Janine:

I want you to go

Janine:

through your network.

Janine:

I want you to look at your

Janine:

past clients, those warm

Janine:

leads, even those amazing

Janine:

coffee catchups that had

Janine:

you months ago that you,

Janine:

talked to, and you had

Janine:

that awesome conversation.

Janine:

Go back through them all

Janine:

and ask yourself, "where

Janine:

have I not invited someone

Janine:

to take the next step?"

Janine:

Reach out, reconnect, not

Janine:

with a pitch, with presence.

Janine:

And if you're ready to dial

Janine:

this in, to turn your network

Janine:

into a client generating

Janine:

ecosystem, reach out to me,

Janine:

DM me book in a call with me.

Janine:

Because you don't

Janine:

have to do this alone.

Janine:

I can absolutely show you

Janine:

the very systems I use to

Janine:

turn everything that I've

Janine:

shared in today's podcast.

Janine:

Into reality.

Janine:

And if this episode gave

Janine:

you nudge, or a reframe or

Janine:

a kick in the butt, please

Janine:

share it with friends.

Janine:

Janine:

Let me know.

Janine:

Let me know because this

Janine:

is the only way we're

Janine:

gonna spread this kind of

Janine:

information through the

Janine:

ecosystem that is podcast.

Janine:

Until next week, please

Janine:

keep showing up and keep

Janine:

leading and keep leasing

Janine:

that brilliance of yours.

Janine:

I look forward to catching

Janine:

up with you next week.
