I am not a white man

For centuries, the image of a successful businessperson has been that of a middle-aged white man. All the success tips, strategies, and business practices that we’ve been taught have been moulded and designed by those who held the majority of power and influence at the time.

But here’s the thing – times have changed. More women are entering the workforce and running their own businesses than ever before. Yet, we still find ourselves trying to fit into a mould that no longer reflects our aspirations and values.

Reflecting on Experience:

So, let me ask you this – how many years have you been working? When I asked this question to my clients, we discovered that we not only had decades but centuries worth of collective experience in our group.

Personally, I’ve got over a 20-year corporate career and over 12 years of experience running my own business. In those years, I’ve had wins and significant losses, helped train and influence those around me, resolved conflicts, and faced many fears. With all of this experience under our belts, why do we hesitate to rewrite the rules and shape our businesses according to our vision?

Embracing Change:

Focus on doing what you’re truly exceptional at and delegate the rest effectively to your team.  If working five days a week doesn’t serve you, why not create a three-day working week?  If the aggressive business style doesn’t resonate with your values, prioritise kindness and empathy in your approach.

I am not a white man, and I refuse to run my business like one. I won’t succumb to societal pressure that tries to make me small or fit into a predefined box. Think about why you’re running your business the way you are. Are you operating on an outdated operating system? And if so, why haven’t you changed it?

If we want to create a better world, we have to make it happen for ourselves. In this episode, I encourage you to get curious about building your business and life on your terms.
