The thinking trap

Most people don’t have a capability problem. They have an execution problem.

I see it constantly. Smart, experienced people – decades of proven work behind them, real results for the clients they serve – who are nowhere near as far ahead as they should be. And it’s almost never because they aren’t good enough. The talent is never the question.

What stops them is quieter and far more frustrating. It’s the thinking. The endless thinking. Perfecting the offer before anyone sees it. Rewriting the website for the ninth time. Tweaking the proposal, second-guessing the price, sitting on the idea until it’s “ready.”

And while they think, the opportunity moves on.

I see it most clearly in a particular kind of woman I work with. She’s left corporate – or been made redundant – with a dream of building something of her own. In the early days, the referrals come. The work lands because people know how good she is. It feels like it’s working.

Until the referrals slow down. Often because the foundations were never built – no real positioning, no demand engine, no system bringing the right people to her door. And suddenly the woman who is brilliant at her craft is the world’s best-kept secret. Running hard, running on empty, building a business while quietly starving.

And it’s the needless part that gets me. All that brilliance, going unseen and unpaid – when it never had to.

Here’s what’s making it more urgent right now, not less.

AI has changed the game. The pace has changed. Clients expect faster. Competitors are producing more. Opportunities appear and disappear in weeks, not months. The person stuck in the thinking trap isn’t just losing time anymore – she’s losing ground, while the market moves at a speed her old way of working simply can’t match.

Most people respond to this in one of two ways. They panic and start flailing – new offer, new funnel, new everything. Or they bury their heads and hope it passes.

Neither works.

I think we’re at a fork in the road and it might be the most important one we face as we navigate business through genuinely uncertain times. Seth Godin wrote about it this week in the context of how we choose to use technology. I’ve been thinking about it this way.

One road uses AI to cut corners. To go faster, do less, save a bit of money, and produce work that’s quicker but more average – the same mediocre output as everyone else who took the shortcut. It feels efficient. I think it’s a slow road to becoming irrelevant.

The other road uses AI to do the braver work. To go deeper, not faster. To take the thinking you’re already brilliant at and amplify it, so you can do the work only you can do.

Same technology. Two completely different futures.

The women who win the next few years won’t be the ones who use AI to do less. They’ll be the ones who use it to think deeper, not faster. Who take the hours it gives back and pour them into the thinking only they can do – the judgement, the nuance, the strategy, the work that can’t be automated because it’s the most human and the most them.

That shift – from stuck to moving, from cutting corners to creating real value – is the single most important one you can make right now.

And it’s exactly why I’ve spent the last six months building something I’m really excited about. Something built entirely for that braver road. Something that closes the gap between how good these women are and how well their businesses actually perform. Something that is built on my 20+ years of IP, teaching and results driven frameworks.

I’ll tell you more this week.

For now, the thing I keep coming back to is this. Where in your business are you circling when you could be moving? What’s the idea you’ve been perfecting instead of testing, the decision you’ve been quietly avoiding instead of making?

That gap – between knowing and doing – is where most businesses stall.

It’s also the most fixable thing there is.
