Everyone’s obsessed with scaling these days. Ten times this, exponential that—meanwhile, you’re just trying to keep your head above water. That was exactly what came up in my recent conversation with the brilliant Nicky Miklos. We explored something that’s been on my mind lately: how do you make sales and grow your business without losing yourself to the hustle?

What Smart Growth Actually Means

Here’s the thing about smart growth—it’s not about chasing every shiny opportunity that comes your way. Nicky put it perfectly: it’s about sustainable development that doesn’t leave you or your team burnt out and resentful. We’re talking about growth that considers the long-term well-being of everyone involved, not just the numbers on your profit and loss statement.

An easy trap to fall into is thinking that more hustle equals more success but over these last few years, I think a lot of us are realising this isn’t the case at all.

The Three Buckets of Smart Growth

Nicky breaks down business growth into three areas that will shift you from being reactive to proactive: Skills, Strategy, and Systems.

Skills aren’t just about learning the latest marketing hack. It’s about understanding your team’s mindset around sales, embracing what naturally drives them and building capability that turns everyone into proactive performers.

Strategy means stop neglecting the goldmine you already have. Your existing clients, referral networks, and leads are sitting there waiting for you to nurture them properly. Nicky recommends understanding your different types of leads—cold, warm, and hot—and treating each one accordingly.

Systems are where Nicky’s Compass framework comes in, creating structure without suffocating creativity.

The Compass Framework:

  • Culture – Craft an intentional sales culture rather than hoping it magically appears
  • Operating Rhythms – Establish regular check-ins and team meetings that actually serve a purpose
  • Markers of Success – Define what winning looks like for your specific team with clear metrics
  • Performance – Focus on development and capability building, not just hitting targets
  • Architecture – Ensure you have the right tools and processes (like CRM systems) working for you, not against you
  • Synergy – Create proper flow and coordination between departments to prevent miscommunications
  • Scope – Stay aware of market opportunities and adapt to them without chasing every trend

This framework provides structure without suffocating creativity, helping businesses establish sustainable growth systems that support long-term success rather than short-term hustle.

The Relationship Goldmine

Business growth is often sitting right under your nose. Your existing clients and referral networks are treasure troves of opportunity, but most of us are too busy chasing new leads to notice.

Nicky’s advice is to guide your clients with confidence and intention. You’re not there to convince or cajole—no one wants an icky sales pitch. You’re there to lead them towards the solution they’re already seeking. You are the guide who knows the way forward so help them navigate their journey with clarity and purpose rather than leaving them to figure it out alone.

One Thing at a Time

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the things you should be doing, Nicky’s recommendation is beautifully simple: focus on just one thing. Pick one of the three key areas or one element of the Compass framework and refine it before moving on. The idea isn’t to overhaul everything at once—that’s exactly the kind of thinking that leads to unhealthy hustle.

Your One Wild and Precious Life

Our conversation wrapped up with something that’s stuck with me: the importance of intentional action. When you choose smart growth over reactive chaos, you’re not just building a business—you’re creating something that aligns with your values and aspirations.

It’s the small shifts in mindset and approach that build towards significant transformation. And honestly, your business should work for your life, not the other way around.

So here’s my challenge: pick one area from Nicky’s framework and commit to improving it this week. Not revolutionising it, just improving it. Because sustainable success isn’t built in a day—it’s built in the daily choice to show up intentionally.
