Stop Sounding Like Everyone Else

You don’t need a stage to have impact. But you do need a voice that’s truly yours.

As I sit here preparing for two full days of deep work with my incredible Inner Circle and Elevate members – and a handful of special guests – I’ve found myself reflecting on all the keynotes I’ve delivered this year.

From corporate teams to government departments, business groups to international stages – it’s been a ride. But the thread that’s connected every audience, every room, and every conversation?

People approaching me with – “I wish I could do what you do.”

If you’ve ever dreamed of creating influence through your words – of standing on a stage, leading a workshop, or simply being more visible in your space – this is for you.

First things first. Every single time I help someone shape their keynote or signature presentation, we throw the first draft out.

Not because it’s bad.

Because it’s not them.

The first draft is always too polished. Too templated. Too… not-you.

Here’s what I’ve learned over and over: the best speakers, storytellers, and leaders don’t sound like anyone else. They sound like themselves – but louder, clearer, and with more conviction.

And that’s what makes them unforgettable.

It’s not about imitating Simon Sinek or Brene Brown or Ken Robinson. Sure, they’re brilliant. But they’re brilliant because they own their message, not because they borrowed someone else’s voice.

So if you’re ready to step up and be heard, here’s three things to consider:

  • Start with what matters to you – What do you need your audience to walk away knowing or feeling? Speak from that place. Passion is contagious.
  • Use your stories – Real stories ground your insight in lived experience. As my dear friend Gabrielle Dolan says, story is the shortcut to connection. (And her new book Story Intelligence is now on pre-sale – grab it.)
  • Lean into your uniqueness – My brilliant mate Kieran Flanagan calls it the WOW factor. Are you animated? Stay that way. Quiet and composed? Own it. Don’t dilute your energy to fit someone else’s format. That thing you think is too much or not enough – it’s actually your magic.

And remember, this isn’t just about keynotes. This is about how you show up everywhere – on LinkedIn, in your offers, in your emails, even across your socials.

Too many of you are chasing what’s trending instead of claiming what’s true.

So, whether you’re standing on a stage or behind your screen, remember this:

You don’t need to be viral. You need to be visible – as you.

Because your voice, when owned fully, is the very thing that sets you apart.

You’re not here to be forgettable. You’re here to be unforgettable.

Here’s to being heard.
