These past few months have felt a bit heavy, don’t you think? Everywhere we turn, there it is—this call to brace for impact, to hunker down as if the end is nigh. News flash after news flash talks of economic downturns, clients pausing, tightening budgets—you name it.

And let’s be honest, there’s that nagging hum of fear we can’t quite silence. It’s not the dramatic, scream-worthy kind of fear, but that persistent whisper of, “What if I’m not ready?” or “What if I fail?” Fear might not be the enemy, but today, let’s find out how to transform that fearful whisper into a motivating force.

From Seaside Fear to Courageous Dips

Let’s start with my own example of overcoming fear. Picture this: a seaside in the north of England. Cold, grey, not exactly waving you in with a toasty embrace, is it? If you grew up there, or any place similar, you’d know the feeling. Swimming wasn’t really in our repertoire! Even moving to Australia—with its iconic beaches and inviting waters—the fear lingered like an unwelcomed guest. My husband, a surfer, and my kids were at home in the waves, whilst I lingered on the sand. That’s fear for you—it loves to keep us standing still.

But then came a shift, thanks to my friend Kelly on one of our sweaty morning runs. “Let’s finish with a dip in the ocean,” she said. My insides howled “no!” yet out came a tiny “okay” from my lips. That first dip was mayhem—a cacophony of squeals and shivers! But right along with that cold shock were exhilaration, pride, and the first sparks of courage.

Reclaiming Power, One Dip at a Time

As we continued our post-run ocean dips, the sea stopped being the terrifying beast I’d imagined. It became a badge of courage. For you, your ‘ocean’ might look different. Going live on camera, charging what you’re truly worth or saying yes to that daunting speaking engagement—it’s all about taking that brave step despite fear. Bravery isn’t about being fearless. It’s making that leap even with your heart hammering in your chest. And when you weave this brave step into your routine, it becomes second nature, turning “I can’t” into “I am.”

Switching Fear for Curiosity

Here’s the secret: fear shuts doors; curiosity throws them wide open. Instead of, “What if I fail?” try asking, “What might I learn? What doors might open?” Approach it playfully—where fear sees disaster, curiosity sees growth. This shift from potential failure to learning is where true confidence lies.

Inside Stories of Triumph Over Fear

I’ve seen it firsthand in my Elevate Inner Circle. One client hesitated over raising her prices, but when she did, her prospect didn’t even blink. Another went from camera-shy to landing a speaking gig after committing to just one weekly video. Then there’s the client whose story went viral, leading to new opportunities, simply by stepping out from behind corporate jargon. Their journeys didn’t blossom from the absence of fear, but from turning it into a guiding compass.

Your Micro Dare: Take a Step Forward

Here’s your challenge: identify one fear that’s been playing safety officer in your life. What’s one small step you can incorporate into your routine to overcome it? Involve a colleague, a friend, anyone who can cheer you along. This isn’t about slaying fear but about daily triumph over it, little by little.
