If you’ve followed this journey with me, you’ll know that each conversation is an opportunity to learn, grow and maybe even find that missing piece that will spark your next big realisation. Today, I’m sharing someone truly extraordinary—Fleur Marks, a force of nature who has redefined what it means to live, lead and leave a legacy. We dive deep into a topic that touches so many of us: burnout, and what happens when life forces us to completely redefine success.
When I invited Fleur to join me, it was not only to talk about the unbelievable journey she’s been on, but also to address a topic that touches so many of us: burnout. We’ve all felt its grip, especially those who are climbing the dizzy heights of their careers. But what if the real treasure isn’t just the climb, but understanding how our journey shapes our destiny? For Fleur, it’s the ‘Waiting Room of Death’—a stark, yet profound reflection on life through the lens of a terminal diagnosis.
Fleur was once at the pinnacle of corporate success, ticking off every box that defined high performance—an enviable wardrobe, prestigious titles and a relentless drive. But success began to feel hollow and unfulfilling. Her life also took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. From boardrooms to a reality where her time is finite, Fleur’s journey has been about radical acceptance and redefining what matters most.
Redefining Success Through Radical Acceptance
In that waiting room, where many would succumb to despair, Fleur discovered a new kind of brilliance. She realised that real success didn’t lie in achievements alone, but in the ability to live each day fully, with self-compassion and purpose. As she put it beautifully, “I had to redefine what success looked like for me, knowing that my time here might be limited.”
It’s easy to see how her story resonates so deeply. The pursuit of career heights often leaves us running on empty, pushing boundaries until our bodies finally call timeout. For Fleur, her body demanded a halt, commanding her to remission and reflection. And it was here that she chose to pivot, to transform her outlook from the driven executive to a woman defined by intentionality.
The Power of Self-Compassion and Joy
Throughout our conversation, Fleur emphasises the power of self-love and compassion. She’s built a life where ambition and self-care coexist—an ambitious desire to contribute, but not at the cost of herself. Whether it’s a silent Japanese tea ceremony or simply wearing sequins to add sparkle to her day, Fleur’s practice of finding joy and balance is a testament to her resilience.
Her work now focuses on guiding leaders through their own journeys, helping them reset and refocus. She encourages leaders to embrace vulnerability and authenticity, and to seek clarity and perspective not just in their careers but in life.
A Call to Live Intentionally
For those of us juggling work, family, and the seemingly endless checklist of life, Fleur’s journey is a reminder. We don’t have to wait for a crisis to start living differently, to stop striving for perfection and start savouring the present.
So, I encourage you to ask yourself: Are you truly leading a life that matters to you? Have you defined what success means on your terms? Are you embracing compassion and allowing joy into your everyday life?
I hope Fleur’s story inspires you to embrace your personal brilliance, to seek balance and legacy beyond traditional measures of success. After all, it’s not just about surviving the waiting room of life, but thriving in it.
