It’s a NO From Me

Here’s the bit nobody tells you when you’re building a business – the growth years aren’t won by what you say yes to. They’re won by what you’re finally brave enough to say no to. Most clients I work with are still playing the yes game long after it’s stopped paying off.

I know, because I played it for years. Every enquiry felt precious. Winning the client mattered more than whether they were the right one. Every invitation got squeezed into a calendar that was already full. I told myself that was hustle. It was actually cost – I just wasn’t counting it.

These days my no list is longer than my yes list. Here’s five of them.

1. I say no to discounting myself. I watched too many brilliant women drop their price because they were scared the client would walk. The ones who negotiate hardest are usually the wrong ones anyway. Every time we discount ourselves, we send a message that our expertise is negotiable. I’d rather attract fewer clients who value the transformation than fill my calendar with work that leaves me exhausted, resentful, and wondering why I started this business in the first place.

2. I say no to waiting for the “right time.” There will always be another reason to delay the conversation, postpone the investment, or wait until life feels less busy. Perfect timing is a myth people hide behind. Growth belongs to the ones willing to move before they feel ready. Every chapter of my business has been built on progress over perfection.

3. I say no to doing it alone. I used to think asking for help meant I wasn’t capable enough to have got there myself. Backwards. Isolation slows growth. The right mentors, collaborators and community shorten the learning curve, expand your thinking, and remind you what’s possible long before you can see it yourself.

4. I say no to confusing busy with useful. A packed diary used to make me feel like I was winning. Now half my best thinking happens nowhere near a to-do list, and I’ve stopped apologising for that.

5. I say no to building something that looks successful but doesn’t feel like mine. This is the big one now. If it means becoming someone I’m not, it’s a no — whatever it’s worth. I want a business that energises me, fills my days with people I actually like, and gives me the freedom I set out to build it for. Success should feel as good on the inside as it looks from the outside.

Every no creates space for a better yes.

A yes to clients who value your expertise. A yes to deeper relationships. A yes to work that stretches you the right way. A yes to a business that reflects your values instead of your fears.

So, what’s the one thing you need to start saying no to today, so you can finally say yes to the business, and the life, you’ve actually been trying to build?

Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to know what’s on your list.
