“I recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone” – Alanis Morrissette
Such were the closing words to Heather Swan’s speech at the Layne Beachley “Aim for the Stars” dinner last week, leaving the audience and me included, in awe, mesmerized and so utterly re-inspired at what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.
Heather’s story is one of courage, commitment, a “can do” attitude and a determination to achieve her dreams. Her “how can I?” vs. an “I can’t” attitude.
Let me say that again – a “how can I?” vs. an “I can’t” attitude.
Just saying those words over and over again instantly changes your mind set, your level of determination, your willingness to achieve.
Whilst Heather’s story is one of achieving amazing feats, breaking world records and going where no-one has gone before through her extreme sporting success, her message is loud and clear for everyone – personally and professionally.
“We are all capable of so much more than we think”.
“Value every moment and the effort you put in as much as the outcome.”
“Failure has a lot to teach us.”
“Simply remain committed. Have a commitment to dream.”
We are all, individually, completely in control of our own lives, decisions and success. Of course there are challenges along the way, things will not always go as planned and failures will be experienced but what is key is how you face these challenges. Do you face them head-on, acknowledge, learn from them and move forward or do you get knocked down and stay there always thinking “could have, would have, should have”?
A commitment to dream and remain committed – what a perfect mantra!
And if you are not convinced check out Heather’s to do list!
