It might surprise you that I call myself an introvert.
Yes, I speak on stages, run events and put myself out there. But where do I truly get my energy? It’s from solitude, thinking and deep one on one connections.
The big crowds? Nah, they’re not really my thing. Loud rooms full of forced small talk? Definitely not my thing.
But despite this, I’ve successfully built a network that spans industries, countries and decades. How? Well, by doing it in my way.
There’s a myth that introverts can’t be brilliant networkers. We’re led to believe that it’s all about shaking every single person’s hand, collecting a stack of business cards and being the loudest person in the room.
But let me flip the script for you.
Introverts are actually phenomenal networkers. We don’t waste time on the surface level stuff. We dig deep, listen and observe. And these are huge strengths, given that true networking is about forging meaningful, authentic relationships.
So, today I want to share my own approach to networking and take you through some practical ways you can build meaningful business connections as an introvert.
Introverts are Naturally Wired for Connection
Contrary to popular belief, introverts excel in the realm of building genuine relationships, precisely because we aren’t rushing through small talk or trying to be the life of the party. Let’s examine some reasons why introverts are outstanding networkers:
- Deep Listening: Introverts are exceptional listeners. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, you engage fully, understanding your conversation partner deeply. This creates a sense of being valued—crucial in any relationship.
- Thoughtful Conversations: With a distaste for surface-level chatter, you naturally gravitate towards insightful discussions. At your next event, prioritise quality connections over quantity.
- Observation: Introverts notice the nuances—body language, tones, the room’s atmosphere. Use these observations to connect on a deeper level.
- Genuine Follow-up: You thrive in maintaining relationships. Your keen memory for details, such as a story or a specific project someone mentioned, makes your follow-up sincere and effective.
- Trust Building: Introverts nurture connections gradually, focusing on trust without the rush. This sustainable approach lays a foundation for lasting professional bonds.
Practical Networking Tips for Introverts
Having recognised these inherent strengths, let’s translate them into practical strategies for networking:
Focus on Fewer, Deeper Connections: Initially, I dreaded networking events. A roomful of people? Exhausting! But then, I changed tactics—aiming for just three meaningful conversations at each event. These three connections turned into long-lasting relationships, offering real opportunities without leaving me drained.
Host Your Own Small Gatherings: Perhaps the large networking event isn’t your cup of tea. Try hosting intimate gatherings like a small dinner, a virtual coffee chat or an exclusive meetup. Such environments are more conducive to introverted strengths, allowing for profound conversations.
Say No More Often: Here’s a permission slip to skip some of those big networking events. Be strategic; align your presence with your goals and energy levels. Embrace JOMO—the Joy Of Missing Out—as you choose quality over quantity.
Be Authentically You: Dismiss the myth that you need to be outgoing to succeed. Lean into your strengths—your listening, your observing, your ability to connect deeply. Craft your networking style around these strengths, and let relationships grow naturally.
I challenge you: dismiss the pressure to conform to a louder networking style. Be deliberate, authentic, and true to yourself. As you navigate the business world, focused on expanding your network, always remember that your quiet strengths are not weaknesses—they are your superpowers.
