Why Discipline is So Damn Difficult (and How to Master It)

Discipline: we all struggle with it. Yes, even you high-performing, visionary powerhouse women – I see you! So why is it so difficult?

Even when we know exactly what to do to get ahead, distractions (scrolling, binge-watching or alphabetising our spice rack) so often manage to pull us away. It turns out, distraction isn’t just an obstacle; it’s enticing! So today, we’re getting to the bottom of why discipline is so damn difficult and talking about some strategies that can help us master it:

1. Lock down your goals and your ‘why’

2. Ditch the temptation and remove distractions

3. Celebrate the small wins

4. Be kind to yourself

5. Track your progress relentlessly

What’s one thing you’ll take away today? Remember, discipline isn’t a punishment – it’s a declaration of what truly matters, of who you are and who you’re becoming.

Janine:

Hello.

Janine:

Welcome to another episode

Janine:

of Unleashing Brilliance.

Janine:

Today I wanna talk

Janine:

about something that

Janine:

everyone struggles with.

Janine:

Yes.

Janine:

Even those high performing

Janine:

visionary powerhouse

Janine:

women out there.

Janine:

I see you.

Janine:

Why is discipline

Janine:

so damn difficult?

Janine:

Why is it that even when we

Janine:

know exactly what we need to

Janine:

do, we still end up scrolling,

Janine:

binge watching alphabet sizing

Janine:

our spice racks color coding

Janine:

our bookshelf, or reaching

Janine:

for just one more tip, Tam.

Janine:

No judgment here.

Janine:

'cause I love chocolate

Janine:

biscuits and malteses.

Janine:

They're practically

Janine:

self-care in my land.

Janine:

But let's get into it.

Janine:

Why do we find discipline

Janine:

so damn difficult?

Janine:

I think there's a delicious

Janine:

allure of distraction

Janine:

that's going on.

Janine:

Some will tell you that

Janine:

the problem is willpower

Janine:

or brain chemistry or

Janine:

resistance, but I reckon the

Janine:

real reason is distraction

Janine:

actually feels amazing.

Janine:

You know, it's

Janine:

instant gratification.

Janine:

It's finest, isn't it?

Janine:

It whispers, you know, just

Janine:

five more minutes when

Janine:

your alarm goes off, it

Janine:

lures you into saying,

Janine:

I'll follow up tomorrow

Janine:

instead of hitting on that.

Janine:

Pitch, email hitting,

Janine:

send on that pitch email.

Janine:

Now it's sexy, it's

Janine:

sparkly, it's seductive,

Janine:

and guess what?

Janine:

It's also a big fat liar

Janine:

because here's the truth bomb.

Janine:

If distraction is all

Janine:

about short-term pleasure,

Janine:

then discipline is all

Janine:

about long-term purpose.

Janine:

It's not about suffering,

Janine:

it's about stacking

Janine:

those little wins that

Janine:

create the big dreams.

Janine:

You know, we're talking

Janine:

and writing a book.

Janine:

lending and TEDx Talk.

Janine:

Launching your empire, getting

Janine:

high quality leads on repeat.

Janine:

It's not exactly things

Janine:

you achieve by winging

Janine:

it with your phone in one

Janine:

hand, and lovers blind

Janine:

on in the background.

Janine:

It's not the sort of thing

Janine:

you can achieve by actually

Janine:

not doing the boring work.

Janine:

This stuff, getting

Janine:

those TED Talks, writing

Janine:

that book, building your

Janine:

business requires work,

Janine:

it requires discipline,

Janine:

it requires consistency.

Janine:

And that, my friends, is often

Janine:

the boring part of business.

Janine:

But I think it's time

Janine:

to flip the script.

Janine:

Let's talk strategies because

Janine:

discipline doesn't have

Janine:

to feel like a bootcamp

Janine:

hosted by Sadistics personal

Janine:

trainer that, let me tell

Janine:

you, I'm retraining for a

Janine:

high rocks right now, and

Janine:

that's how it's feeling.

Janine:

We've gotta flip the script.

Janine:

So here's a couple

Janine:

of strategies I want

Janine:

you to think about.

Janine:

The first one is to lock

Janine:

down your goals and your why.

Janine:

Because without clarity,

Janine:

distractions actually

Janine:

win every single time.

Janine:

You wanna grow your

Janine:

business, great.

Janine:

But what does that mean?

Janine:

What does it mean?

Janine:

What is the motivation?

Janine:

What is the reason

Janine:

for doing this stuff?

Janine:

My clients, especially

Janine:

those in Elevate, we sit

Janine:

down every single quarter

Janine:

and we create a game plan.

Janine:

And this is not just lofty

Janine:

goals, but it's actually

Janine:

the micro actions over

Janine:

these next 90 days that will

Janine:

actually get them there.

Janine:

And by the way, we set these

Janine:

90 day plans, not just from

Janine:

a business and professional

Janine:

perspective, but also.

Janine:

Personal perspective

Janine:

because we're not just

Janine:

single-minded human beings.

Janine:

Many of us have other

Janine:

things going on.

Janine:

We've got life dreams, we've

Janine:

got relationship goals and

Janine:

all those sorts of things.

Janine:

And it's really important that

Janine:

we get clear on these micro

Janine:

actions that are going to

Janine:

get you there because a great

Janine:

idea without a plan, well,

Janine:

that's just wishful thinking

Janine:

with a hashtag, so work out.

Janine:

What is it that you

Janine:

are wanting and why?

Janine:

Most importantly, why

Janine:

does it actually matter?

Janine:

And I want you to

Janine:

think really, why?

Janine:

Really, really, really why?

Janine:

The second thing is you

Janine:

gotta ditch the temptation.

Janine:

Willpower's cute, but

Janine:

it's, you know, unreliable.

Janine:

It's like a bad ex. We've

Janine:

actually gotta put systems

Janine:

in place, not stress.

Janine:

So if it's about turning

Janine:

off your phone, it may

Janine:

be about shutting down

Janine:

your email, it may be

Janine:

about hiding the remote.

Janine:

Whatever it is, you've got to

Janine:

get serious about removing.

Janine:

Those distractions.

Janine:

One of the things that I've

Janine:

shared this before that we

Janine:

do in my Elevate community is

Janine:

we do a weekly hour of power.

Janine:

This is where we meet

Janine:

online, the cameras are on,

Janine:

but microphones are off.

Janine:

Every single person is muted,

Janine:

and we spend that hour in

Janine:

business development mode,

Janine:

like our goals depend on it

Janine:

because they actually do.

Janine:

And let me tell you, knowing

Janine:

someone's watching you

Janine:

on Zoom, well magically

Janine:

it makes you productive.

Janine:

Funny that right?

Janine:

So remove the distraction.

Janine:

Number three making sure

Janine:

that you're celebrating

Janine:

those small wins.

Janine:

I used to think that

Janine:

discipline meant suffering,

Janine:

you know, like nose to

Janine:

the grindstone, gray

Janine:

tracksuit, eye twitching

Janine:

kind of suffering.

Janine:

And you know,

Janine:

honestly, I think it's.

Janine:

There's a lot of that

Janine:

childhood conditioning

Janine:

about you work hard, you

Janine:

keep working hard, and

Janine:

someone will notice you

Janine:

and remember my North of

Janine:

England dad saying, but it

Janine:

doesn't have to be like that.

Janine:

Now what I do is I

Janine:

celebrate the glimmer

Janine:

moments every single month.

Janine:

I look at what I've actually

Janine:

achieved in that month,

Janine:

what are those small steps

Janine:

that I've achieved, and

Janine:

I give myself the reward.

Janine:

It might be a massage,

Janine:

it might be a glass of

Janine:

bubbly at the beach.

Janine:

It might even be

Janine:

a guilt Free nap.

Janine:

It doesn't matter

Janine:

because success isn't

Janine:

just about the doing.

Janine:

It's about the being,

Janine:

and you deserve to feel

Janine:

good along the way.

Janine:

Next strategy number

Janine:

four is about being

Janine:

kinder to yourself.

Janine:

I used to be really bad

Janine:

at this, you know, like

Janine:

world champion at beating

Janine:

myself up, kind of bad.

Janine:

But now I pause, I

Janine:

reflect, I laugh.

Janine:

Sometimes I swear loudly

Janine:

and start again, but

Janine:

I never stay stuck.

Janine:

I tell my clients

Janine:

the same thing.

Janine:

If you've fallen off

Janine:

track, don't spiral.

Janine:

It's just about acknowledging

Janine:

what happened, what got

Janine:

in the way, what stopped

Janine:

you, and then taking

Janine:

ownership and pressing

Janine:

reset because there is never

Janine:

failure, only feedback,

Janine:

or sometimes a slight.

Janine:

Back.

Janine:

And one of the final

Janine:

things I do is I track

Janine:

my progress like a hoard.

Janine:

I am only retentive about

Janine:

tracking absolutely anything.

Janine:

This is like my

Janine:

superpower to my business.

Janine:

It's one of my

Janine:

biggest secrets.

Janine:

I track everything.

Janine:

I track daily sales

Janine:

and cash flow.

Janine:

I track word camp when

Janine:

I'm writing a book.

Janine:

I track social media reach,

Janine:

I track my email list.

Janine:

These are my habits because

Janine:

I know that if I don't

Janine:

track it, it doesn't happen.

Janine:

And inside my Elevate and

Janine:

Inner Circle community,

Janine:

every single one of

Janine:

us has a dashboard.

Janine:

Actual dashboards, not

Janine:

just metaphorical ones.

Janine:

Those dashboards are built to

Janine:

measure the very thing that my

Janine:

clients are measuring at that

Janine:

moment in time to ensure that

Janine:

they're making a step forward.

Janine:

We look at the North

Janine:

Star metrics, which could

Janine:

be sales and profit.

Janine:

We look at the attention

Janine:

metrics, those metrics that we

Janine:

need to be following to ensure

Janine:

that the right amount of

Janine:

eyeballs are seeing our stuff.

Janine:

we track our

Janine:

attraction metrics.

Janine:

How many people are

Janine:

coming into our world?

Janine:

What is our lead

Janine:

gen looking like?

Janine:

and then we Track the

Janine:

activation, metrics, what's

Janine:

actually being converted

Janine:

because every single one of

Janine:

those numbers shows us both

Janine:

the impact of our activity.

Janine:

And it gives us clues.

Janine:

It shows us the breadcrumbs of

Janine:

where the opportunity is, of,

Janine:

where we need to take action.

Janine:

What you focus on grows.

Janine:

What you neglect well,

Janine:

that gathers dust.

Janine:

It fuels self-doubt.

Janine:

It adds the cobwebs

Janine:

into your business.

Janine:

So the big question is,

Janine:

are you going to let

Janine:

distractions keep you in the

Janine:

loop of, I'll do it later.

Janine:

Are I gonna commit to

Janine:

a kind of discipline

Janine:

that builds freedom?

Janine:

It builds flow.

Janine:

It builds long-term

Janine:

brilliance.

Janine:

I know which camp I'm in

Janine:

and I know which camp you

Janine:

belong to too, and it's not

Janine:

the one with empty promises

Janine:

and half eaten biscuits.

Janine:

So what's one thing you're

Janine:

gonna take away from today?

Janine:

Maybe it's shutting down your

Janine:

inbox during deep work time.

Janine:

Maybe it's scheduling

Janine:

your own hour of power.

Janine:

Maybe it's finally getting

Janine:

clear on your goals

Janine:

and why they matter.

Janine:

Whatever it is.

Janine:

Please make a commitment and

Janine:

make that commitment today.

Janine:

And once again, if you've

Janine:

loved this episode or you've

Janine:

got someone that you think

Janine:

needs to listen to this

Janine:

episode, please share it with

Janine:

one of your besties, with one

Janine:

of your business buddies, with

Janine:

one of the incredible other

Janine:

people in your network who has

Janine:

got big dreams, but just keeps

Janine:

getting pulled off course.

Janine:

And of course, tag Me,

Janine:

act Janine, wherever

Janine:

you're sharing it.

Janine:

And tell me what

Janine:

are you focusing on?

Janine:

Discipline isn't punishment,

Janine:

discipline is a declaration of

Janine:

what matters, of who you are

Janine:

and of who you are becoming.

Janine:

Now, off you go.

Janine:

Go and unleash some more

Janine:

brilliance this week and I'll

Janine:

catch up with you next week.
