Are you constantly chasing after the next big thing, only to find yourself overwhelmed and burned out? You might be suffering from “Shiny Stuff Syndrome”, 3 deadly S’s, a disease of distraction that plagues many business owners.
Does the average day in your business look something like this? You’re scrolling through your social media feed, and suddenly, you come across a new marketing strategy that promises to revolutionise your business. Without hesitation (or a test to see if this is the right next step for your business), you dive headfirst into implementing it, only to abandon it halfway through when the next shiny opportunity catches your eye.
Shiny Stuff Syndrome is like being a kid in a candy store. But for women in business, constantly chasing after shiny objects can have some serious impact on your business:
❌Inability to finish projects – you end up jumping from one thing to the next without ever collecting the data and running the numbers to find out what worked and what didn’t.
❌Poorly planned ideas and directives – because the strategy may or may not align with your business it all becomes a bit wishy-washy.
❌Burning through cash – Not being able to put your money behind what works leaves you burning through cash as you throw some in every direction, hoping that something will stick.
❌Stagnation – not only does your business not grow, but often your leads will start drying up as inconsistent implementation creates a confusing experience for your future clients.
So, how can you overcome the 3 Deadly S’s and stay focused on your goals?
1. Pause
Give yourself time to sit on ideas before launching them. Research and evaluate whether they align with your long-term objectives. You know when something comes across your desk that truly excites you because it comes from a place of alignment and growth, so if it’s not a HELL YES! It’s a hell no.
2. Communicate
Communicate openly with the key people around you (your team or your inner circle) about any new ideas. Their insights can invite perspective, alternate views and help you avoid hasty decisions.
3. Measure
Decide what success looks like. This will help you maintain focus and track progress over time. Measure and know your numbers so you can make smart and informed stop, start and continue strategies.
4. Quit
Only abandon projects when absolutely necessary. Stick to your long-term goals and adjust your strategy as needed to stay on course.
Remember, Shiny Stuff Syndrome is a mindset that can be overcome with awareness and discipline. By staying focused on your objectives and avoiding the lure of shiny distractions, you can build a more sustainable and successful business.
